From the pictures it looks very shiny at the high points (not in a good way), IMHO. 1881 is a very easy year to find, have you looked at other options?

Also, there is something going on with her mouth. It almost looks like the head was covered in something and they missed the lips (that could explain the soggy letters in liberty). IF you do decide to purchase it, I would be interested in seeing a close up of those lips.

Looks like a polished AU, but perhaps that is the lighting.

Well, the seller has a lot of positive feedback and claimed that the coin had not been cleaned to the best of his knowledge, so we'll see what we see when I get it in hand. Thanks for the comments!

All right, I just got the nickel in the mail:

The LIBERTY on the obverse is much more visible in hand than it was in the seller's picture, which is nice. It's definitely not a proof, sadly, but neither does it appear to have been polished. Can't rule out a dipping at some time in the past, but I'm happy with the overall appearance and amount of detail.

Very, VERY nice! Your pictures are much better than the seller's pictures. At a glance I would think this is high AU, I think the obverse is suffering from a weak strike but the III on the reverse, awesome! I would believe you if you were to tell me there is no rub and it is MS, I just have a problem seeing that from the pictures.

Again, awesome III!

Thanks, CoinsKelly! I was holding my breath to see if the first response was going to be "obviously harshly cleaned"...

Even when seeing your pics (which are definitely better), I have a feeling it was cleaned before, but I'm not really a 3 cent collector, so I could easily be wrong.

I don't see harshly cleaned from the pictures, maybe lightly cleaned but so minor I think you may only notice in hand

Well, it would be better if it were MS, but I still think I got a decent coin for my $85.
