I wonder how many people on here that use IPhones know about the potential security risks involved. I would wager not many, perhaps someone should start a topic in the main discussion forum.

Most older digital cameras do not have geotagging capabilities but most more expensive/newer smartphones and cameras do. I posted a New York Times article about it in the photography section a few months ago.

OK - I don't have a fancy phone that takes pictures, but I do have a new Canon PowerShot SX160 IS digital camera. I've looked and looked through the instruction book, but don't see anything about GPS. Does anyone know anything about this camera? Completely illiterate here.

I don't think that PowerShot camera has GPS.

Those holes are useless though, what can you put over the top to make it look inconspicuous?

For long-term storage that you don't need to get in and out of, you could try filling the hole about 90% full of packing peanuts and then putting about 2" of concrete on top. Only you will know what is below that new 'crete and it is easily bashed out with a hammer when you do need to get into your hoard. Until then, it is pretty much invisible. It could also be covered with a rug and a piece of furniture of some kind. Not perfect but then what is?

My photos carry a Geotag according to where they're saved on my PC (don't believe Geotag gets uploaded onto Flickr) but the coordinates the picture on my desktop gives put the picture about 30 miles away from where I live. Not it is very impressive that the camera could be so accurate, but it's not like the thing can pinpoint my house or something. Only about 80,000 people live within that 30 mile radius. I like my chances.

TBK - please don't stop posting pictures, someone could track you down a heck of a lot easier off your name from your email than your pictures. Just sayin.

well sorry to hear that TBK.

When I started a thread on that subject of everyone showing their stuff, I had genuine concern for everyone and I respected everyone's desire to show stuff.

I would hate to hear and cringe when I hear or ready about any sort of robbery and thefts... especially when you ready in the paper that it was a seniors home.. and they got cleaned out that's sad.

i can just imagine the devastation many wold have having their many years of hard work of coins no matter what they have, to be taken away from them ...

I should also like to say that I talked about "risk management". I am trained in that and have gone down the list including legal matters, and social media and tagging as described earlier. I wish I had mentioned it first thing :/

Please everyone, please be careful with who you tell and leave as little details as possible regarding your coins.

OK, I was just pulling your legs. I had to install a sump pump for a customer & as we were clearing out the area, I came across some ammo boxes & couldn't resist the opportunity.

I was just going to say that's an awesome idea, just make sure someone else knows or someday when you're gone there will be a very wealthy plumber walking around!

I would love to share and start such a thread regarding Internet security issues/photos/tracking that would work on this forum and protect others but after all the name calling and accusations, Ima sit out that idea.

If someone started it, I would participate and give suggestions and pointers that haven't been addressed here however it seems that many think its a laughable point and inconceivable that you can be traced and leave a foot print from your actions and posting on even a forum such as this one.

Its a shame but perhaps ignorance is bliss.

Its not inconceivable, its just highly unlikely and far down on the risk management scale of things that will draw attention to you.
