I am a lot younger in the morning than I am in the evening.

Nice to hear so many collectors with great knowledge calling themselves young.

Just for the record I am 50 something. Married for over 34 years. Oldest is 30 this year and youngest of 5 is 18 this year.

As it comes to sales people (and young men) my girls have a picture of me and my chain saw. Nice touch! The boys seem to work it out by walking out that door just as you people have.

Im younger than your oldest and older than your youngest. Not exactly a kid but I would say I'm in the younger group of collectors.

A simple solution is when you walk into ANY shop is simply smile, be engaging and act like you own the place without being arrogant and you WILL get the full attention of the owner or hired help.
If that doesn't work just go to another shop

Being nice doesn't work, some people just have an attitude. If I remember correctly after not being allowed to view the 'nice' coins at this shop I asked if I could have a look at some of the loupes/glasses he had on display as I figured I was in a coin shop I may as well look at/buy something.

I asked if I could view a particular loupe to which I was asked in a very condescending tone "Why?", I said I had a loupe but was looking at upgrading it so I just wanted to compare if any of the ones in the glass cabinet were easier/better to view through, to which he said "Why bother they are all the same", anywho after two minutes of what can only be described as convincing I was allowed the 'privilege' to view the two loupes, noting that after 5 seconds of looking at each I was told "So are you finished with that one?" in a tone that indicated that I really was just wasting his precious time in his opinion (also noting that not a single other person was in the store).

After he said that to me the second time I just handed back the glass and said thanks but that i'd stick with the one I've got. On the way out I thought I could at least ask though if he had any pre-decimal proofs in stock, he replied by saying "No we don't have any but even if we did I seriously doubt you'd be able to afford them anyway".

After that I just walked out and would encourage every member on this forum to never go to that coin shop unless they feel like being as frustrated as the above, I note I have been to this store twice (I thought maybe I got him on a bad day) but I've had the same experience twice and seems I'm not alone.

He is simply a £^%#er! Sounds like you had an even worse time dcoin.

Gerrys shop is the neatest I've seen robster, I was just trying to butter this bloke up (clearly didnt work!)

The most disorganised was a coin shop in wellington NZ. Crap everywhere! I was literally treading on coins on the ground as I walked in the shop door lol

I just went through this topic again. And I am glad that it is still active.
This morning, I woke to a message from a favorite dealer who had a coin that I may be interested in. Now THAT is good business!
No matter whether I want it or not, HE REMEMBERED ME!
When distance and other constraints make shopping in person difficult, finding a trusted dealer can take some time. But it is well worth the effort.

This YN is turning 62 in another three weeks.

Hi guys,

After reading this thread I just had to sign up and add my thoughts. I know exactly which coin shop you are talking about simply based on the experiences described!

I bought a few coins there in my early days and when I look back on them now I can see that they are over graded.

My final visit there was about 1 and a half years ago when I went in asking for some high grade shillings. I was looking for Gem. The guy then grumbled and asked me why I wanted such a high grade. I explained that I wanted the best for my collection and he went on to ask me in a very patronizing tone how long I planned on taking to finish my set. I was a little taken aback by this question because as far as I can tell most of the finest collections took a lifetime to put together. If I could just waltz into his shop and complete an entire collection in one day what would be the point? Where would the fun and satisfaction be in that? Personally I love looking at 'perfect' coins that have beaten the odds and survived so many years.

He tried to tell me that I should stop wasting my time and collect the proofs instead. I told him that my interest was in circulation strikes, thanked him for his time and walked out. Every time walked in there they have made me feel intimidated and belittled. I have not been back since that day. I also agree that their shop is well presented but they don't have any pre-decimal on display and look down at you when you ask to view them.

I must admit that after my experiences at this shop and after meeting a few similarly grumpy characters at the Melbourne ANDA show I have lost a little faith in dealers. Of course I have met some nice dealers at the show as well.

to CCF!

Yet another negative testimony.

Whilst it makes me feel a little better than it wasnt just me it also sickens me to hear that so many people have been put off by this bloke.

I'll be heading to melbourne again in a couple months and I'm tossing up going back and playing up to it, maybe having a little fun with him.

Ive got a bit of time to come up with something good.

I wont come straight out and tell him what I think but i'll p him off for a bit I think.

Maybe get a wad of cash show him I'm interested and have a bit of money to spend. Then maybe i'll spend and hour putting things aside before just walking out whilts he's mid sentence.
