I say leave them be. Once you cut them open there is no going back. That said many of those dates can be purchased for a small markup to melt so they could be replaced. When you go to sell the coins you will find out if it was good to open them.

Just a personal opinion here but it seems many, many of these sets have already been cut open. Esp the 55. I own three of the 55 sets now and 2 are in capital plastic. It seems to get harder each year to find them in ogp. Leave em be.

it's just packaging. the longer you leave them in the better the chance they become ruined once the plastic starts to rot.

Well, most of you know that all of my proof coins now reside in Dansco albums. However, I do not think that choice applies here (although I was tempted to give this as an 'Other Option" vote). Actually, I am intrigued by the idea of recycling discarded modern proof set lenses.  Quote:

For deteriorated OGP like that I like putting them in ATs, and then in the AT album pages. I think they look great presented like that, and they are well-protected. I didn't rinse mine in acetone or anything...might that a problem down the road?

This is why I didn't collect sets earlier than 1965 for quite a while. I would never take them out of original packaging and they don't present well. I'm over that now and have the '64 and will get more sets as soon as I get more cash  Gotta stick with OGP, but using a modern emptied case is something I had not thought of, I'll have to ponder that one. |

I share your pain, I have a 1956 with a Type 1 Frankin and 2 '63s. I already cut up one 1956 that also had a Type 1 in it. I haven't been able to bring myself to cutting up the other one yet though, although the idea of the plastic rotting make me want to better preserve them.

It's personal: just think of what the set will look like in 5, 10, etc. years. what condition is it in now? What climate-control do you have in place? (e.g. I live in the desert where extreme dryness rots plastic faster.) Do you plan to sell it anyhow? Do you care to present/view it in the meantime?

Maybe acquire the sets again in pieces? Then you get both! Kinda depends on budget of course

All of my classic silver-era Proof Sets are in Capital holders. Best option (I think) would be two collections, one in OGP and the other in Capitals. At one LCS here, I could buy all the Proof Sets from 1950 to 1964 (in Capital holders) at once, it would just cost a "mint"...  |

I broke all mine out and put them in air-tites. It was hard because I also like having the coins in the OGP but I was worried that the coins would start to tarnish, etc. as the packaging got worse. Capitol plastics holders look very nice too.

Well, as I can not find empty proof cases on ebay, that won't be happening any time soon. But I AM leaning towards doing that and then acquiring the sets again to leave them be. I keep them in proof storage boxes, so I don't believe they are going to deteriorate rapidly. And they are not jostled arounda lot. But still... LOL      Just had to post pics of the sets in question.  Had a heck of a time trying to light them without glare. But these should suffice. Edited by smokeriderdon

Something about seeing them in OGP. Takes me back to when I first started collecting with my dad. Thanks for the pic.

I like currency pages for 3-ring binders. Get the ones with 3 per page, and those sets slide right in. I use a tiny bit of scotch tape on one edge of the page, just to encourage the sets to stay where they belong. Then, I found a box which fit the binders just right, so they stand on edge with the spine up. All the envelopes do in a separate box. It's really nice for viewing this way.

Those capitol plastics holders do look nice. If they were mine, I could not bring myself to crack those out of the OGP. I know that the OGP is not very protective, but to me there's something cool about having those sets in the package that the mint intended them to be in.
I know the value is in the coin and not the package, but I'm just weird like that I guess.
