MAYBE those particular rolls are contaminated with something you're allergic to. Are you allergic to any creams, air freshener, etc.?

OddCoins, I was thinking the same thing.

It is possible that the coins, the boxes, etc. got covered with some pesticide or microscopic mold/fungi (I know -- ick, ick, ick).

So try messing around with coins that you have previously handled and see if you're okay. If the old coins don't bother you then I would guess that the new coins have been contaminated.

I was thinking the same thing about outside contamination that is why I switched boxes. In a few days...I will try another box.

As far as I know the only thing I'm allergic to is fish. I can touch them or whatever as long as I do not consume them. Sucks big time as I did not grow into that allergy until I was 12 years old. I love fish...just can't eat it. SIGH.

I will see if I can find some cotton gloves in my area. Any ideas on best place to check? I think I might be able to get them from a medical supply store.

I use Medi Touch - Nitrile Elastomer - Latex free gloves. They are XL and Blue in color and powder free.

Try using a smaller size rubber glove. They stretch, so a tighter fit would give you more dexterity. Latex would stretch more, but a lot of people have a latex allergy. Nitrile is a little less elastic, but no sensitivity issues.

You could also try finger cots. These will cover only the top end of your fingers. I have only seen them in latex thought, so beware of sensitivity.

White cotton gloves can be found in most drug stores. Again, size may be an issue, and if too large will cause a loss of dexterity.

A red rash certainly sounds like a metal contact allergy to me, although nickel is a far more common metal allergen than copper or zinc. Your doctor should be able to test for copper and zinc allergies.

I got some white cotton gloves from a photo shop. They wear these when handle making photos on paper.
I also got Blood Poisoning from handling too many quarters playing 25c slot machines back when they used actual coins!
Had a small paper cut and all that nasty germs on coins got into blood system. Glad the slots only take paper bills now, but still dont win!

Lol...Thanks mike. I figured you might.

I will try the cotton gloves. The issue I have is that the gloves are XL in size and still fit tight for me. darn these large hands. LOL!

I have thought about the latex finger condoms (what I call them) but when I go through rolls I dump the roll into my hand and sort them out. If I did gain an allergy to the metal comp...just protecting the fingers would not help.

It could be something completely unrelated and just a coincidence as well. I hope a few days away from the coins will help me determine. I have some pictures I really should take anyhow.

Thank you for all the insight and opinions. I will keep you informed.

I know that camomile has the goodness to sooth allergies and help preventing it. So drink camomile tea and if it works, it would be good and if it doesn't help, then it would be good too.

Just wondering. Even though the gloves you use are latex free, could it be that you are allergic to the nitrile gloves, which are synthetic polymer? I used to think I was allergic to various metals & got itchy dry, red hands whilst sorting. Took me awhile to figure out it was the gloves. What happens if you sort without any gloves? Circulated pennies & nickels aren't as sensitive as proof, uncirculated, or silver coins. Actually, no need for gloves... just wash hands from time to time... just my 2 cents.. he he...

I am sure coins have a lot of germs on them from being handled so much. Really no telling where they may have been and all of that accumulates on your skin.

Well, yes, germs, but guess that's true with most everything. But I'd rather deal with a few germs, which I can wash off, rather than wait for my hands to sweat, turn red & get itchy. It can take hours or even days to heal a rash. Who really knows what germs develop on the skin whilst wearing gloves? Ironically, copper is good for the skin, generates energy, and even eases pain... (if you find copper pennies in the bunch)...

I'm not allergic to the gloves. I have had the box just over a year. Started with 100 pairs and down to my last couple of pairs. I do not use the gloves all the time. Really just use them once I'm handling coins I do not want to worry about damaging them with any contaminants that might be on my hands. Especially after giving coins a acetone bath and they are dry and ready to be put away for storage.

I think it has just from the fact that I have handled a lot of coins in the past 3 weeks with many different contaminants on them. Somewhere around 64,000 coins in 3 weeks is quite a bit. I figured I will leave them be till Friday and go at it again with some cotton gloves if I can get them in my size. I will also pick up some Benadryl (spell check) to help if it is an allergic reaction. Yesterday and today...my hands are free and clear. No redness or itching. I will see what tomorrow brings.

Thanks to everyone for the responses and suggestions. I hope no one else runs into a similar situation. It was sure an uncomfortable sensation to deal with.

Happy hunting and may your finds be plenty.

Quite a few people have sensitivities to base metals. One of my relatives can't wear a watch with a stainless steel back. I am not sure about copper, but nickel for sure causes trouble for some people.

Yah. My mother can not wear gold. Makes here break out. I have never had issues before but I am getting older. LOL! I will know more tomorrow. I pile of boxes is a calling my name. Or...it could be the wind or maybe my dog has gas. Anyway...Hope to be back at it tomorrow.
