What was your method of cleaning, and how long did it take?
We see the 'after' pictures. Have you any 'before' ones?

Monkey, some of those are done, the others could be put in distilled water or oil to get the tougher stuff off. A good soak.

Allectus is a quite popular chappy - especially in high grades like that. The galley is to symbolise the Navy which gave Allectus his power and stopped Rome landing an invasion force and de-throning him. A popular coin indeed and one I would very much be interested in.

I have been collecting for 11 years now and I still don't have an Allectus. They are sort after on this side of the pond.

I have tried soaking in olive oil over a long period of time, but I was not happy with the results.
Apparently olive oil is slightly acidic, and this helps to remove some of the junk,
but,
the acidity also helps turn long buried coins very dark, to almost black.

No idea, I havent been looking out for Allectus. Id certainly be willing to trade for it (got to love the UK rulers! PM me if you're interested in keeping it in its homeland)

Note: I checked on eBays completed listings for this and its certainly very varied. From as cheap as £4(!) to ridiculous prices for some of them. The galley type seems to be quite common and seems to go around £15 but some have sold higher (like £30-£40) but they must be varieties as there are more people bidding on those.

Either way, I think you should hold off cleaning it until you've practiced on a lower quality coin.

Monkeybean; would there be any chance you would allow me to PM you a quick question about metal detecting permissions?

Monkeybean, a soak in water and a light clean with cotton buds is fine.

Allectus is always popular, and yes, "over the pond" the prices increase manifold.

Your Allectus may be a true diamond in the rough. If the obverse is as nice as the reverse. It is most likely worth more than the others combined and should you decide to continue collecting well worth keeping as a real 'find'. After over 35 years collecting ancients I well remember the ones I let slip away. It's a keeper until you get a feel for the subject and something even better catches your eye. Always trade up and never down !
