Wow, that's a good average, about 1 wheat every other roll seems good.
A lot of people keep copper cents too, pre 82 cents. There are also many varieties to look for, even in zinc cents. You have to decide if you want to look superficially, deep, or very deep!

Keep the copper ones
Hope you get lucky and find an Indian head.
You are doing well with wheats. I usually find 10-12/25$. Although my average is skewed because I hit 275 in one box. I don't include that box

That is a real good wheat average. I normally keep anything pre 82 in pennies. I also keep 2009 and up unless they are in bad shape. In nickels I keep anything pre 70, all s mints, and 2004-2005. Dimes and quarters I keep anything below 1970. You obviously want to look for errors, but starting out, I just looked for the obvious ones. Good luck in the future. As I get too many of the new coins or even the older ones (1960s pennies) I roll them and sell them on ebay.

I average 1-2 wheat pennies for every $5 searched. I tend to save all coins made before 1980.

Yes Broseph, I know it sounds strange, but I keep 1970 and below. I sometimes throw them in with my ebay auctions. I just got into a habit of keeping everything pre 70. I also like to make rolls of one date of these.

I normally find quite a bit in nickel rolls. I would try them too. However, keep checking on the penny rolls. You have a really good wheat average compared to me.

when I buy a box of pennies I keep, canadien pennies, 2009's, pre-82's, wheats and '68-'74 san fran mint. those are fun to find! I find it just as fun to find the san frans compared to wheats..

Quote: 1982 and before pennies. Wheat pennies, and Pre-1964 quarters, halves, and dimes. You also want to keep not only the pre-1964, but also include 1964 quarters, halves and dimes, but I believe that's what you meant.

Yes, definitely.
Metallic Composition of the Penny:
1864-1942 - bronze, 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc 1943 - zinc-coated steel 1944-46 - brass, 95% copper, 5% zinc 1946-62 - bronze 1962-81 - brass 1982 - varies between those brass and those 97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper (copper-coated). Have to weigh them - brass = 3.11 grams, copper-coated zinc = 2.5 grams. 1983 to present - copper-coated zinc
