Im afraid that the Ike dollar was not around during WW 2 ,, but I'm sure similar coins of the era may have been used in such a way. The one you have pictured is more than likely a novelty coin made to be a snuff box or some such thing. Metalman

chrycopaul, that's pretty awesome. How did you realize they were like that? Did they weigh less or something?

All I have to say is that if an Eisenhower dollar was used during World War II to hide anything, it would stick out like a sore thumb, especially with a date in the 1970's. Perhaps it was a secret agent from the future!

I found them in rolls exactly like they are. Only the one side.

Prethen, they just used that as an example, all the ones used could have been destroyed. What you said reminded me a little about the movie The Terminator

This one is not a "real" Ike dollar, although I am sure anyone with a lathe could mill one out...instead most are cast copies. They can be found on online auctions from time to time for about $20

Long time ago there was a magic store downtown Chicago and I used to go in and look around. There were all sorts of coins like that of almost every denomination. I guess they eventually get put into change by mistake.

All very good answers to the question, so PSPVinyls that should take the mystery away.

I've seen so-called "box dollars" offered by Jonathan Kern in Coin World ads, as well as from other dealers. These are supposedly genuine US Trade dollars that were cut in half, hollowed out, and fitted with a hidden hinge. The box dollar was then used to smuggle opium during the late 1800's. I don't know how true the legend is, but the coins are definitely available!

U-2 pilot Gary Powers carried a box coin silver dollar with a poison needle in it. He was suppose to croak himself with it if he was ever shot down which he apparently forgot to do.
I believe a lot of the spy information from WWll was sent on post cards as micro dots dotting the "i's" in the hand writing.
