In reference to the pic of the 25c PCGS PL65 just above.....

Would that coin have come from a complete Proof-like set from 56 and separated into it's own separate holder..? ..

....and is it worth the expense to do that to a set by breaking them up.
I'm thinking of my 1955 Arn set also showing here.

It is worth it, if the individual coins are of gem quality (i.e., PL or SP 66 or better, with superb eye appeal). I sent in this 1955 dollar last year to ICCS and it came back PL-66 Cameo, but I thought the eye-appeal was superb. So I sent it to PCGS this year, and it came back PL-67+ (second finest graded by PCGS) - I would say that for this specific coin, it was worth it!!

Photos were taken through the ICCS mylar flip...

DEVLEC...

Re: "Would that coin have come from a complete Proof-like set..."

Yes, unfortunately I think many of these already low-mintage sets were broken up... often the one dollar coin by itself if certified & slabbed at a high grade will sell for as much as the whole set itself...

On some of the dates the penny and fifty cent piece may be worth a decent amount if slabbed... but most of the nickels, dimes, and quarters don't draw that high a resale value...

You've got a real nice set there... if it were me I'd just keep it together...

Take care, and Have a Great Evening!

Early PL dollars were available individually from the mint as well as in sets.

Thanks for this Cameo reminder SPP ..

Here are another 3 examples. I'm guessing that the Tombac SP's are always struck as a cameo..is that right..?

Can a mint state coin have a cameo? or are cameos only found on proof coins?

Yes John..Most of the 'cameo' coins showing here are MS coins.
You just have to keep on looking...They're out there ...waiting to be discovered....

@ Airwolf, beautiful coin! Should grade high; very few if any surface marks. Cameo for sure on reverse; obverse more of a heavy cameo... definitely worth sending in for grading...

Another question....

If I had a cameo coin in one of the pliofilm packages from the 70's that I sent for grading would it come back MS since it is a circulation issue?

Nope. It will be either PL (proof-like) or Numismatic BU (after 1976...)
