OldSkool - what features help you recognize the fake?

Did we miss anything that maybe you're looking at ?

I tried matching it to all known varieties and it didn't match any. Then I matched it to an image of the jinghuashei version and it matched exactly. It's a really good counterfeit. In the past it would have fooled me. In fact without matching the photos I might have bought it. The only thing odd is that the 8s on these coins have varying thickness (I'm sure there's a term for it), but on this, it's the same all the way around.

As OldSkool says it is a fake and there are several things that identify it as such. First are the denticals on the obv fro 7 to 12 o'clock. The denticals on the die went all the way out to the edge of the die. As a general rule you never see the out side nd of the denticals unless the die is misaligned or the coin is off.center. Star 6 points noticeable right of the coronet point. That is only true on the obv of N-7 and this is not N-7. On the reverse there is a large center dot. The only variety with a large center dot is the rev of N-2 and this is NOT N-2. So we have an obv and a rev that do not exist, bad denticals on the obv, and then there is the edge. These coins were struck without a collar and the edges of the coins are rounded, never flat like this coin is.

Hi guys I really appreciate your help on this. I went and checked that site that OldSkool mentioned and it sure looks like the 1818 on there except someone has toned this coin. Also the I in Liberty has a little extra to the top right of the coin and that matches the coin on the (jinghuashei coins) site. I'm glad I checked before I listed this on ebay. I called the coin shop and he said to bring it back in Monday. Another thing about the coin it looked a little on the grainy side under a loop so I wasn't feeling good about it being real. Again thanks a lot this is a very nice site I'm glad I found it. Ken

Conder- If stars 1-5 were shifted a bit clockwise, it would almost pass for an N-6 on the obverse. Scary.

Hi Ken. I wonder how your coin shop got this coin and how they didn't recognize it as a fake. Personally, I'd be a bit wary of the rest of their coins.

Thanks OldSkoolMadSkilz - I learned something and that's why I love this forum. Before I posted I also tried matching to the known varieties and while a couple of them were almost right I couldn't make an exact match. I didn't have the confidence to say that because varieties can be tricky.

I am curious about the sales price for this coin. A real coin in this kind of grade would be VERY pricey!!

Hello Fisher904
May I invite you over to the World Coin section of this forum where forum members Swamperbob and ColonialJohn have been teaching an ongoing college level class in Counterfeit Detection. I was doing yard work all day and only saw this post just now but as Condor101 already posted, the edge was a dead giveaway for the fake. (Swamperbob's mantra ... always look at the third side, the edge)
I would also be curious about the price the "coin shop" charged, it could be an indication that they knew it was fake so made it "too good a deal to pass up".

The price was 125.00 only because the color was a little off. I did get my money back with no problem. This is the 1st time that I know of that one of these got by me. Some are pretty good. Thanks again for all your help.

although the comments on this site are awesome, this is scary to think of how good some of the fakes can be.

I think a real coin in this condition would be $300 plus.
