All years are worth keeping. At some point I suspect the Mint will stop issuing them all together. As it is now they have not issued any for general circulation for a few years.
The moment something is no longer available it will rise in price maybe not by much but it will go up.

I'm collecting a set of as good of quality as I can find in rolls. I'm almost done w/ it. I only need 2003+, both 87s and both 70s. On top of that, I keep AU years w/ low mintage numbers and of course all silvers. I actually think I found a proof like 65 yesterday, I will post pics later tonight!

I would suggest that you keep all of the 1986 and 1987 halfs that you come across, and naturally all of the silver 50¢ pieces.

You probably know, but for those lurkers who might not: 70-D, 87-P and 87-D were not released into circulation. They are Mint Set-only issues. It is a fortunate searcher indeed who comes across one in a roll. There is no 70-P. |

thanks mick, yeah, I'm feeling pretty lucky though, I think I might be able to find them w/ enough boxes. I think a box or two a week should get me exactly what I need. What are the mintage numbers for 2001+?

2001: 19.504M D, 21.2M P 2002: 2.5M D, 3.1M P 2003: 2.5M D, 2.5M P 2004: 2.9M D, 2.9M P (from Red Book) Bags and Rolls (not including Mint Sets) 2005: 3.50M D, 3.80M P 2006: 2.00M D, 2.40M P 2007: 2.40M D, 2.40M P (from usmint.gov) Edited by texasmick

Odd thing is until you mentioned it I never considered any of those halves worth saving. However, there sure are some low mintages in that series. The 87's are in the 2 million + area. Then most go back to the 2 digit million figures until 99P at 8+ million then really drops down to the 2 and 3 million mintages for 2002,3,4,6, and even 2005 is only in the 3+ million area. None area really big deals at the coin shows I've been to. I would think anyone saving these would go for any with a mintage below 5 million. That is only because I suspect there is about 50,000,000 coin collectors around and that would mean if they all went for halves, some would never have a complete set.

I agree, save the 1987's and anything from 2002-2006 because if you campare the mintage of the 1970 to the 2002- coins they are not far off so in about 5-10 years from know these coins could hold a higher premuim. I have found a few 2003-2005 halves in rolls so they are out there but that was also from the batch were I got 10 proofs also.

If you find any from 1963 I'd say save those, otherwise trade in 2 at a time for some 1970 Eisenhower dollars. |

I've got a complete set of P & D BU Kennedys (1965 through 2007) - no proofs though. I reckon that's because I bought the 7166 Album, and used that as my guide when completing my set. Not real expensive to complete, and, as has been pointed out previously, should the mint discontinue minting them in the near future, their value will, indeed, go up. And, if they don't, that's okay. They're nice coins to have anyway.
Something I would point out - the mint mark on the 1964 D is located on the reverse rather than the obverse.

Most of the Kennedy keys are a matter of grade. Sure, there are the low mintage issues that may be worth saving but generally you should look for nice examples in circulated or unc condition. Some dates like the '71 are tough to find with a nice strike so even an attractive XF is worth setting aside. The '74 comes with ugly surfaces and the '76 usually has a bad reverse, etc. Even the most common dates like the '72-D isn't often seen in nice AU.
It should be remembered when looking at mintage figures that before 1999 the mint set mintage is reported as part of the circulation run. After '98 in order to get the total mintage you have to add in the mint set mintages.

The ballpark guidance for what number of coin mintage of half dollars is worth keeping from me is: All if your bank account allows. I just start with the best ones. Then I put aside all low mintage ones. Then I put aside the rest as long as I don't need more money to buy more coins. If I need a little cash, I spend those halves I don't intend on keeping and just enjoy the looks on peoples faces that aren't used to seeing them. I guess it's just a personal question just like what stock to buy, hold or sell. For some reason I really like the halves so I tend to hold on to more of them than I probably should.

I can still remember when the 1964 JFK's came out. I recall thinking that I was in on the ground floor, and would collect the coin as long as I lived.
Then came my career, marriage, and kids. Somewhere, the Kennedy Halfs got lost in the shuffle.
I do have a completed album, and they are my favorite U.S. circulating coin, but I had hoped to do much more with them, such as collect large numbers of the more rare years, and in considerable quantity.

I agree with Cladking. The 71's are tough to find in a good strike, fortunately I found a real nice one last week, will post a pic if I can borrow my friends camera again. Also found a real nice "S" from a proof set, can't remember the year right now. Been throwing the 87's back into the mix once I found a nice one, guess I better change my ways.
