I reckon the cost of slabbing it will be more than the value of the coin. Although this is a stunning coin 1948 Melbourne pennies are one of the easiest dates to get in high grades with nice lustre.

Would come back as MS63 RD or RB, not really worth the cost of slabbing/shipping, 1948 melbourne pennies in full red are not rare at all.

The carbon streaks aren't that bad, I reckon it has a good shot at a 64 slab, it looks lightly toned though, I doubt it'd make a RD slab (though this could very well be the the lighting). My only concern is that there appear to be fine hairlines on the obverse; It's difficult to tell if they're cleaning hairlines but they seem to stop at the legends would tend to indicate that they are.

I actually like the carbon streaks. The 1949 Melbourne penny I have chosen for my set is CH.UNC with great lustre and extreme carbon streaking. I think it adds a lot of character and makes a coin unique.

Streaky Planchets add to a coins appeal, particularly when being viewed by non savvy friends.! A bit like tan lines.

What is 'slabbing'?

Sending it to a TPG such as PCGS or NGC.

"Although this is a stunning coin 1948 Melbourne pennies are one of the easiest dates to get in high grades with nice lustre."

This is a nice one I picked up on ebay earlier this year:

1948-Penny-Orange-Luster

1948-Penny-Orange-Luster

People often say that this is an easy coin to find in high grades but despite months of looking I still haven't been able to find a better one. Can anyone help?

Only MS63? Surely you jest!

Here's an MS64RB currently listed on ebay:

Isn't mine a whole lot better?

Plus mine is red - or, rather, a straw gold colour, which is the correct one for Aussie 'reds.'

You can't tell from that picture if it is red, but if it is, than it probably would get a ms-64rd.
