Yes, I do keep the pre 81 nickels.
They aren't frequently found in circulation, so I usually get them when hunting rolls.

I keep all the nickels up to 1999 and from 2000 to 2006, the ones with no P's except for 2000.

1967's are still out there, found one yesterday. I keep 1981 and before and 1991's.

Rabbits go in a special roll for me, and so do 2005 Victories (I just like the commemoratives). My cut-off point for mixed 99.9% nickel rolls is 1965 - anything before that (with the laureate queen) is filed specially. 1963 and 1964 nickels are put in the same roll by virtue of being round, 12-sided nickels go in the 12-sided nickel roll, and if I ever find a steel or tombac nickel, I'll put them in their own special roll too.

So far I've found 3 rabbits in a little over a month of searching approx $30 worth of nickel rolls. I keep 2002's because I like that year, 2005 victories and anything 2001. Cause 2001 is a cool number and so is 2000. Also I like all cupro-nickels and pure nickels, because I am a bit of a freak.

wow 3 rabbits in 30 dollars worth of nickels?!?! thats really good! I've found a couple still, I find maybe 1 every 2-3 boxes... I had gotten 2 rolls of them passed down by family members tho! so I have quite a few. anyone also hoard those 2005 V nickels? I donno why but I've been putting them aside and I have a pretty substantial hoard of them now : ) |

@crimewave: yep I've been pretty lucky so far. I do need to qualify my past response a bit. I searched through an initial investment of $30. I recycle the throwbacks using my local bank's counting machine. That initial $30 investment probably allowed me to search through over $50 worth of nickels when you factor that in. But I do consider myself lucky for getting the three rabbits. I try to visit as many different banks as possible as I found that going to the same three or four leads to a "boomerang effect" after a while.

I got locky once and found an ENTIRE roll of rabbit nickels in great condition.
The thing is, it would be another few decades when nickel becomes a metal that dealers are willing to hoard.
