After a bit more research, ALL the examples of this die marriage on Coinzip show the flatness in the middle/lower obverse hair, the eagle's brow & beak and the tops of the reverse wings.

What's apparent of a great strike, like the fine hairs under the LIBERTY and excellent detail in all the stars and the very nice detail on virtually all the reverse, all point to a flat strike in the above areas and not wear for usage.

Nice job SsuperDdave! You saw through the seeming "wear" and saw the underlying weakness/flatness in the dies.

Of course, this now begs the question: why are all the examples showing this weakness when this die marriage was of two new dies? Did these dies wear out that quickly?

I like it as an EF-45. The coin has a slightly overdipped look to it but I think it probably just the pictures and the coin doesn't have that look in person. Sweet acquisition!

I agree with Superdave. It looks like an AU range coin to me.

I love the double profile.......

Photo help: use a piece of white paper for your background, it will help your camera determine the white balance more accurate which should result in your colors looking closer to the coin in hand.

As for grade, its an AU coin in my opinion.

Congrats on a great coin

Hi,

Before moe pointed out the intricacies of the strike via coinzip I was going with a VF-35.

Now, I'll settle with a xf-45.

It would be helpful to know if a web site exists explaining the existence of these die characteristics w/r/t grading for all types of US coins.

I'm still just a novice, so I can't offer an opinion on grade, but I just had to pop in and say that that is an incredible-looking specimen!
