It's not the lighting on the seller's photos, definitely some photo shop work going on here. If you are not pleased with the appearance return it.

Wow that's really deceptive. Images heavily manipulated to minimize an extremely harsh cleaning. Added to my list of ebay sellers to avoid. Hope you can get your money back Moe. |

I would return it with the harsh cleaning your photo shows. There are more of these out there, find another that will fit the quality of your set.

I admit the seller's ebay pictures were over lit. I also feel the lighting deliberately hid the coin's flaws. Good news: my email to the seller discussing my concerns prompted this response. Quote:
Dear moe145,
I apologize you are not satisfied with the coin. I didn't think the coin was cleaned because of the nice tone it has. Please mail coin back to:
(Seller's address)
Thank you, and I apologize you were not satisfied.
(Seller) The coin's going back tomorrow. |

Definitely cleaned pretty bad. Definitely photoshopped ad pics.
What a bummer, it looked like a super nice coin from the ad pics.

My first impression of the seller's pics was overexposure, washing out the details. It is good to see his cooperative response.

I knew right away who the seller was from the style of his pictures. Had an issue with him selling a counterfeit half. He disagreed with me and the evidence I had, but didn't have a problem returning it though https://goccf.com/t/143472A lagre volume seller like that should see it had been cleaned. |

Is it me, or is the reverse on this coin a little too identical to epikur's old 1856 that was outed as a counterfeit by swamperbob? Perhaps it should be weighed before going back?

Wow, is this a disturbing post plus reading the additional thread from March. Very educational and helpful, but now makes me queezy buying anything of value.
Does anyone have a educated guess on when these were "created", meaning the last few decades or last few years?

I had thought of shooting you an email this morning, Moe. Wish I had. Does that "mashed-out" F look familiar to you as well, though? According to the Wiley/Bugert text, there are nine known reverses to the 1856-O, and ten for the 1855-O; seems unlikely that many reverse dies would have been used for both years (and even if one was, how likely is it that both coins would have been in the stock of a single seller, three months apart, both in uncirculated condition?).
