Who bids on these things?

Some people that dont know and some people that dont care and take a shot at getting a coin below value knowing these auctions usually end lower than they should for things like that. With the buyer protection theres basically no risk to the buyer since if its fake they get a full refund including shipping

I don't like the mint mark and I don't like the pit or the e pluribus unum on the reverse,
looks kind of cast.
I must be wrong though because 21 bids and $3400 with 2 and a half hours to go

It looks like a very clear S to me. 21 bids, but only 6-7 unique bidders.

That's an S. Also, would never, ever bid on a raw '16-D. That's just asking to get robbed.

It looks like a D to me, but the coin looks fake as well, like a cast. The surfaces of the coin look wrong.

Maybe I am missing something, but it looks like a "D" to me. The pictures are a little fuzzy in that area but I don't like the filled appearance of the mint mark. The first dozen or so certified EF details I've looked at on Heritage have a clear opening in the mint mark. Given the most recent auction results, a certified example in the same grade can be had for a few hundred less than the winning bid.

As I look again, it might be a D. I think this uncertainty underscores the risk in buying a coin like this uncertified or not in hand.

It sure looks like a "S" to me, and if so, my comment on the link below on 1916D Dimes is spot-on.

Sold to buyer who had ZERO feedback, but now has 1 positive feedback as a result of this transaction. Interesting comment left by the seller, however: "great buyer, excellent settlement, pardon the trouble"

Hmmmm

Definte PMD and fake 1916-D. David Bowers said to me back in the 1980's that over half of all 1916-D dimes, and 1922 plain LHC's at a coin show could be proven to be fake in his opinion, and were coins that demand authentication in any grades! His advise has always stuck with me on this.

I Have heard stories of some pretty ingenious ways people put the D on there. Which is possible in this case. Jewelers drill, and carefully push the metal up to form the D. If you aren't looking for it, your not going to check the rim too closely.
