I think cleaned too, EF40 is about right might stretch to 45. at $25.00 a great buy!

The coin does look slightly "white" instead of a darker gray which may hint at a possible cleaning but I am guessing it's just the lighting and it looks much better in hand. I'll give it the benefit of a doubt and call it a EF-40. Pretty good buy for the price!

agreed...lighting is a bit strong and could be overpowering the surfaces. 1916 D Merc, how does it look in hand? does it look dull and washed out? if you cant tell, try sending a new pic with natural light

Interesting to note the differences in the depth of detail on various parts of the coin.
I am not an expert in these.
Could that be due to inconsistent striking pressure over different areas of the coin?
If that is the case, the wear would still be even over the whole coin.
In which case, the previous opinions of EF40 I agree with.

these coins are notorious for striking issues. some parts stronger than others. this normally shows up on the shield. from what I see, this is pretty much the case with this one as you are seeing stronger leaves and weaker lower devices

I'm not convinced that coin has been cleaned. I've seen uncleaned examples in that grade that looked like that before. Even if it were cleaned, it would be old and very light and probably trade very close to original. People are far less strict with cleaning deductions the older a coin you're dealing with.
I like it, it's a pretty good buy for $25.

I love a good looking Shield nickel. This is by far one of the best designs to my eye in American coinage. I WISH I could petition the Mint to just press this as a modern day design for the nickel, even if just for a year so we could hoard a bunch as collectors and then they can go back to Jefferson. Panz, sweet coins you have as well fully awesome |
