VERY difficult to find George V1's effigy sharply struck up with the Melbourne '42 plains. In fact, I have never seen one. Maybe one or two exist. My coin is very similar to the examples pictured.
I have just done a search on Google Images. I failed to find a sharp effigy of George V1 there, either.

I don't think its quite aUNC but its very hard to tell from your pictures. At $70 you did well.

I think you would get a better result if you used a couple lights and made sure they were perpendicular to the surface of the coin rather than on the angle as you have now. Did you just use sunlight? Maybe try a desk lamp and if youre happy with that then look at buying some lights.

Try having the coin and lamp directly perpendicular to the surface of the coin. That advice made the biggest difference to my photos by far.

The details are much sharper. Maybe try it outside of the 2x2. You need to have the camera perpendicular to the surface of the coin. You have got it on quite a large angle in that photo. Play around until you get it right.

Hi Serial, I bought 2 cheap desktop lamps from K-mart, the type with a flexible shaft. They cost $9.00-$10.00 each. I have these virtually perpendicular to the coin, with a little "hole" between them, just enough clearence for the camera lens. I prefer to use my cheap powershot camera, as it has zoom and a macro setting on it. I can get adequate to very good photos from this. Nice coin, btw, I am missing a 1942 plain from my collection, and have found that they are quite difficult to get at the right price.
