I have written elsewhere in the past that the designs which superseded the Barber Series have a decided patriotic theme. Of the three, the Standing Liberty is the most militaristic. Instead of looking at the olive branch Miss Liberty looks eastward towards Europe, shield in hand ready to defend the nation. The eagle, instead of resting, is flying at top speed eastward to the War. (On the Flying Eagle cent, the bird is flying westward to the gold and silver fields of California.) Something to think about. As always Moe, a great "day of."
