Quote: Isn't that normal wear for a circulated coin? No, not in the absence of corresponding wear elsewhere. The date is in the wrong position as well; only one die pair was used to strike this issue.

I'm so glad this forum exists or I would have been ripped off.
A huge thanks to everyone for your knowledge and insight. I will definitely not be buying this coin

First glance to me "it don't look right" so good call on saving your money, I've been seeing a lot of these being sold over at alibaba far east website, they even sell in PCGS holders (all fake) though the site says they don't tolerate counterfeits, yeah right. The scary thing is most sales and feedback are from buyers in the USA that ordered multiple pieces.

I'll start by saying that it does not look like a genuine 1894-P. I am going to propose that could be a genuine coin since the mushy details seems to be mostly around where the mint mark would be but not really anywhere else. I think the mint mark(perhaps an O given the weak strike and lower price relative to a S) was removed, the area smoothed , and the whole coin cleaned to help hide the alteration.

No immediate red flags on that recent one.

The most recent one you inquired about appears to have the remains of an "O" mint mark staring at me when I enlarge the picture. There is no way I'd fork over 800+$ for that coin unless I had an extended return period to get authenticity cleared up. High dollar, key date coins that are on the internet, that are not in TPG'd holders, scare me.

The date position is correct but I'm not seeing any indication of the die polish line near the eagle's left foot and I'm not crazy about the die chip in the "G" of GOD . I wouldn't touch this one with a ten foot pole.
