MS62 I think the cheek has too many ticks and scuffs to make it into a MS63 holder for this date. I wonder if they called a PL? Though it sure looks PL, PCGS can be awfully tough on PL and DMPL designations. 1881-S is similar to 1879-S and 1880-S they seem to hold these dates to a whole other level when it comes to certifying any high grade examples. They are also one of the most frequently slabbed coins by TPGs. In almost any other date and mint mark this is a solid MS63 or better coin IMO.

MS64 coin. Could be PL, but I guess it isn't.

Looks like I'm the lone dissenter here. But I'm seeing way too many contact marks to get close to MS64 as I said, a solid MS63 in just about any other date/mint mark combination, except 1879-S & 1880-S. Looks like this coin is graded by PCGS, and I don't think it's PL either, but that part is throwing me for a loop, it sure looks like a toss up for a PL designation. I know PCGS is tough on that on all dates.

PCGS OGH MS 62. In hand you can see this coin is PL obverse and reverse. I think it would grade higher if I sent it in which I wont. I like it just the way it is and I'm not selling it anytime soon.

I'm surprised. I would have seen an easy MS-64.

Yeah, they assigned a lot more weight to the "luster break" scratches than is done today. With that said, props to westcoin for nailing it.

Thanks supgog and SsuperDdave! I see a MS63 in any other date beyond the 1879, 1880 and 1881 SF mints here in todays grading world. I think it should go PL as well, though I'm stuck on that, and would need to see the coin in hand, that is a really tough call to make from a static photo.
