What To Do With All My Pennies

Thanks for the tips. I though about ebay but these things are heavy and the cheapest flat rate box is about $10. I don't think many will pay that kind of postage unless they're getting a hundred bucks worth or so. Maybe somebody here knows a better way to sell them on ebay.

I count about 70 tubes, some only partially filled, some modern BUs (70s & up), a lot of 50s BUs, some 60s BUs, around 5 tubes of 43s, some tubes of 40s BUs, some 40s circulated, some 50s circulated as well as several hundred in flips going back to the teens and several of the blue coin books full. There are several dozen IHs in flips, I thought there was a tube of them, I'll have to look around for them.

I see the famous word "unsearched" a lot on ebay but unless the roll comes from the mint I find it hard to believe somebody somewhere hasn't searched it. I would never post that word unless I was 100% sure the roll hadn't been tampered with. These coming from a dealer I'm about 100% sure they've been looked at closely.

I could post a pic but you're not going to be able to tell much when they're in the tubes and it would take a whole day to go through them to see exactly what's there. I guess I'll eventually have to do that.

It's all depend on how you want to handle this:
a) Quick liquidation - sell in bulk. Warning: You will not get the most money but you will save A LOT of time.
b) Slow liquidation - sort/organize then sale in small lots/rolls. Warning: You will get the most money but it will COST you a lot of times (as you need to sort, organize, research for grade/condition to establish value - which mean you need to learn about the series, learn about condition and grade, etc).

Once you choose one of those two paths, it would be easier for us to help you.

Agree with staying away from ebay. They have added so many fees, it's not worth it! I am selling on there right now basically just to clear out stuff I don't need, but I'm done once I sell what I have. I am leaning toward getting the post count up and selling on here. Free to post and the people who buy it are more likely to not turn around and rip someone off with it, but rather use the purchase for their own collection(s).

I don't know what better option you have than ebay. I know there are fees but where else is there? Any dealer is going to want to sell at a profit and their cut will be much higher than any fees associated with ebay. I guess maybe Craigslist but that has it's own problems.

Looking at ebay, rolls of circulated Indians are going for $40-50 or so.

Rolls of circulated 43's are going for $5 or so; a little more for D or S mints.

40's BU rolls - hard to say what a mixed roll would go for - date rolls of BU go for $40 and up - some dates push $200

50's BU rolls - same story, no one really offering mixed rolls but think you might get $10-15 a roll maybe.

The BU 60's and 70's and all the circulated wheats - sell them in lots - or spend the memorials - they may not sell

The coins in flips - sell individually or in small lots

Coins in Books - sell books and coins together individually - circulated wheat sets seem to go for $20-40

There are cheaper ways to ship a roll or two than Priority Flat. Regular 1st class package may make sense in some circumstances.

As for those flat rate priority boxes if you can fit it in the box they will ship it for the flat rate. I just ship a small flat rate box and it was packed. Thought I was stuffing a suit case for a trip.

For ebay fees, I pay 10% of the price including shipping, and a smaller paypal fee. True, it does reach tons of people, but I am still not selling anything right now.

I also have 1500 wheat cents, and another 1000 memorials.
