Quote: Is this die stage A, with the planchet flaw at 2:00 on the reverse? I am not familiar with "die stages", but there is a raised line (die crack?) at/about 1 to 2 o'clock on the reverse.

Yes, I confirmed this is die stage A. It has a different reverse die than stage B. DavidZerbato noted a rim nick on the reverse, but it is actually the diagnostic planchet flaw for the reverse. Of course, it doesn't mean ANACS didn't dock the coin because of the 'defect'.

Something that really intrigues me about this IHC is the definition of the head band. I don't remember these being so "squared away". Perhaps I am just " biased".

the headband really does jump out. When I was doing research on this variety, I came across this particular coin. I guessed the grade that ANACS actually gave it, too.

It's about that time anyway; Rick Snow's image of this 1865 Plain 5 S-3 (I believe Breen-1967 is interchangeable with S-3?)

Looked more like a full red in the first set of photos I can tell it's indeed a RB designation in the whole slab.

That's an RPD alright--and one of the more interesting ones! It resembles the S-3 in my book Did you get that unattributed? Either way, beautiful coin!

Spectacular coin, and conservative a grade low IMO. Excellent acquisition.

I have been looking at this variety for a while and put her on lay-a-way. Thanks all!
