I'm in the SsuperDdave camp. I see a little indication on the obv that it saw a little circulation AU58. it is however, a stunning coin.

Here are 2 more pictures that give a better idea as to the luster of this coin. It's still sort of hard to tell but I'll just say that every surface of the coin is lustrous.

Nice clarification. Looking at the similarity of what I'm seeing across both arms and legs, it comes across more as Mint State than slider. I'll stick with MS63 but 64 wouldn't floor me.

Now I'm wondering if SecretGlitch got this beauty upgraded into a MS65 holder? I thought it might go myself, but couldn't justify the chance if it didn't. I had it in hand for a few minutes, thought the little ticks on the reverse might keep it from the lofty 65 grade, but if it went up a grade point, then it almost doubled in price! I'm still at MS64 on it. too many tiny ticks to make it I think. The softness on the LIBERTY in the shield and the head are common on this date. exciting to see this coin again here on CCF - it is a small world after all

A lot of conservative grading I see. NGC actually gave this coin an MS-66. And here's probably their logic behind it:
The coin has very few marks, and the fields are incredibly clean. There's an old bag mark on Liberty's shoulder that toned over, and is very forgivable. There are a few incredibly tiny speck-like hits on the reverse field that are hardly noticeable but apparent at magnification. It also is easy to undergrade the reverse as there's some strong die polishing lines that you need to identify as not being scratches. Finally, there's some minor flyspeck stains that are easy to forgive.
The strike is actually quite strong, and that's easy to read if you look at the reverse. The whole coin is lustrous, but I can see why PCGS gave it a 64. The obverse toning is so heavy that the gem-level luster is noticeably obscured, and for some that's very important in the high gem grades. NGC seemed to care more about eye appeal and cleanliness.
My pictures certainly didn't do it justice, and it's awesome to look at in hand. It's actually no longer in my possession, and I'm not the one responsible for the crossover from PCGS 64 to NGC 66. Whoever did that probably made some good money though.

Here is the exact same coin I had in hand and graded at MS63 with a push up one point for the eye appeal. I thought it might make a MS65 on a really good day I'm really, really, surprised it made it into a 66 holder, but that's NGC and why I no longer send any coins to them, especially copper. http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...4&lotNo=7796Sold for $440.00 I had bid it up to $412.00 then dropped out.

I agree with PCGS, by the way. I'd give it an MS64, maybe with a +, myself. It's pretty amazing that someone else knew the past history of the coin. NGC seems to carry a bad reputation with this series, especially considering how they tend to auction at the previous grade-level value.
But that's grading for you, a real subjective "science." Thankfully I have no personal investment with the coin.

Not sure if we're conservative or NGC was VERY liberal on that one. Seems to be an example of NGC market grading it a 66 (saying the market should value it as a 66) because of the color/eye appeal. It would be interesting to auction it in it's current holder and see if it brings the $1200+ a true 66 should bring.

I think 62 or 63 would be a fairly conservative grade and that's what most people guessed. But there's no denying NGC was liberal. This piece most certainly wouldn't get $1200 at auction IMO, but possibly up to $750-800. I hope some future owner holds NGC to their guarantee, but who knows if they'd actually fold and say they over-graded.

Funny how the coin came back to me here! Thanks for showing it SecretGlitch, a great coin as I remember, amazing how after I looked at something kept nagging me about it, like deja vu, and I had to go back into my brain's data base to locate the source of the deja vu feeling I was getting looking at it again after a few years. I look at a lot of coins at Heritage since they are down the road from me, and what better way to keep sharp than by looking at a ton of graded slabbed coins? Especially ones I normally would never see in hand at a show or a dealers store, having Heritage so close is a big plus for staying up on coins. Now I wish I had bought it! But I never thought of cracking out and sending to NGC. Somebody made some quick cash on this one. I think it might get $1200+ at auction from an internet bidder possibly, a reach, but with a coin this pretty and the reverse showing such a strong strike maybe. If you are planning to sell it let us know - I think Great Collections or Teletrade when the market is a bit hotter for sales, it might do really well. It really is a nice looking type coin. Thanks again for sharing it with us!

Like I said, I don't own it any longer. It's a fantastic coin, for sure, and its PCGS holder was the perfect place for it. I just thought it'd be interesting to gauge the reactions of the forum, and indeed, it turned out more interesting that I expected. I'm sure someone who is building a high-grade toned type set may appreciate it.

Ah well, thanks for the "Deja Vu" moment, haven't had that happen in a long time! That was fun! and someone is enjoying owning this piece today in that holder with that grade slapped on it.
