Has the design been chosen because the baby's name is george?

@ enworb
St George is the patron saint of England and the name George is pretty common, especially among royalty. The baby was only named yesterday and that was after they revealed these coins. I think it's just a pleasant coincidence.

@ Fat Freddy Yeah, the gold sovereign "struck on the day of the royal birth" is a truly vile creation. It's easily one of the worst offerings I've yet seen from The Royal Mint. £800 for an 8 gram gold coin and it's not even mint marked or proof quality.

So, if it's a Crown, does it have a face value of 25p?

Five pounds (the value of crown coins since 1990).

Crowns aren't actually minted anymore. It's just old timers sometimes call the £5 coin a crown because they're both about the same size and weight.

It's a beauty: Sorry for the picture quality. It was taken with my phone.

DB---That is a beauty. Do be cautious of posting cellphone pix, though. Savvy viewers can read the cellphone GPS data in the image file metadata and determine where that image was captured (give or take a couple meters in longitude and latitude). If you used an old (pre-GPS) cellphone or deleted the GPS metadata before posting, you're OK.

that's a beauty. Kinda regret not buying it but the .925 did deterred me from buying it. I brough the 2013 proof instead.

I like the fact that it's .925
If it was .999 that would make it a bullion coin whereas .925 makes it more like those circulating pre-decimal coins like the sixpence and crown that were .925 silver until the early twentieth century.

Hey guys, I received one of these coins as an award, it was graded by the NGC and is a PR70 Ultra Cameo but the thing that is really neat about this one is that it has with it cert #2013...... does this mean anything to you guys that really know what your talking about? Thanks for any advice on what I should do with it, don't know if I should sell it or put it in a drawer and hide it from the true collectors...

I have a rather nice crown of George 111, but alas, it is only in about VF. Nevertheless, that is enough to satisfy me.
