DUDE, that is awesome, the holy grail of Lincoln cents! Even if it's not V.D.B it's still a key. I hope it's authentic! Good Luck!

Check a schedule of local coin shows. Often a representative from one of the grading services is there and you can submit your coins in person. Sometimes for a crazy fee you can have the coin graded quickly at the show.

Don't fret about shipping the coin to the grading service. Just have it insured.

Alternately, find a local dealer who will submit it for you. They are familiar with the process and probably carry an insurance policy on their FedEx packages.

Grading will take several weeks.

I would recommend ANACS in this case -- it's not a particularly high grade coin. You're not trying to get a high-grade, just authentication.

There is such a thing as a "weak VDB" variety. If I recall correctly, it came about from trying to remove the initials from the original dies.

There are some weak VDB coins out there for sure. Your coin looks like a genuine 1909-S LWC but there's no way to be sure that VDB is legit without expert, in-hand evaluztion. Good luck, it could be the real deal.

I had a coin which I thought was simply a 1909-S. However, upon closer inspection, there is a faint ".B." on the bottom of the coin....I definitely think the V.D.B. is authentic.

I agree that this coin should be submitted to ANACS (shouldn't cost that much).

One of the pick-up points to confirm if this is a genuine 1909-s-vdb is genuine is in the "B" in V.D.B.. The center crossbar of the "B" must be diagonal, not horizontal.

The "s" mintmark also has it's own diagnostics to determine authenticity.

I posted photo's and the description listing from Bill Fivaz's Counterfeit Detection Guide on a genuine 1909s-vdb in previous CCF replies and can't currently locate the image & code on photobucket to post here.

After looking into it, I do believe it is a "Weak VDB" variety.
Do I list that on the form that I send to ANACS?
I have also looked at it and it certainly appears to have a diagonal crossbar in the B. The S certainly also appears in the right spot....I believe it is Obverse Type 4.

This is exciting because a week ago I had no idea I was sitting on the holy grail![

Thank you all for your opinions.

Simply fill it out and list the coins as 1909 S VDB. I don't know that there is any official weak VDB variety to speak of, though I could easily be wrong. Regardless, it needs to get to ANACS like yesterday to be authenticated.

Just a quick question: why is everyone suggesting ANACS instead of NGC or PCGS?

For me it would be Price (cheaper than the other two) and Reputation (top TPG Service for varieties and [IMO] best known for locating counterfeits).

Sorry, I really got distracted from this when school started up for me last September. I plan to send the coin out in the next two weeks.

Nice!

Something that I don't think was mentioned is that when the order was given to remove the VDB from the coins, the VDB was simply erased from at least some of the existing dies. I don't remember where I read this; it might have been the Red Book. Anyway, on some coins, a weak VDB is present from where the letters were not fully erased from the dies.

That was proved to be nothing but folklore.

Cheaper, less of a loss if it comes back as a fake. I have not seen a good enough picture of the mint mark to decide if this is genuine or not. I have not personally seen such a weak VDB on a genuine S-VDB cent. They are consistently clear and clean on genuine SVDBs.
