Just wondering, can you call ANACS and ask why?

I did call ANACS and they only referred me to the number assigned to the "Grading" which is 4943869 which doesn't say much more than N9. Gotta tell ya, NCG has a much nicer website and friendlier phone reps. I really felt like this was more of a "hobby" based on the way I was put on hold and the cranky rep.
I always read on this site that ANACS is great with Varieties and Fakes, so I didn't really want to "argue" with the rep as much as find out "why". Would you think for the assessment fee they could write a line or two?

Google is your friend. SsuperDdave, now that you've drawn my attention to it, the mint mark does look a little odd. Sure wish I'd have known what to look for when I bought this coin. Do you think the entire coin has been manufactured as a fake or is it a different year Lincoln that was modified to look like a 1914d?

It's a 1914 Lincoln (common date) with an added mintmark. I should say probably but the likelihood is about 99.9% that's what it is.

BH1964 - I'm curious about how they added the mint marks. Also, if they are going to go through the effort of doing that, why not use the correct mint mark?

Nowadays you could be standing in a snow field in Siberia, decide you want to know what a 1914 D cent looks like, type it in your phone browser and have an answer in seconds. Not that long ago, you either had to look at an actual example or find a reference book. Spoke with a coin dealer a bit ago who said that they never buy 1914D cents or 1916D dimes from old collections because they are usually fake. Resources weren't as easy to come by then. |

Hadn't thought of it that way. I didn't think that it was faked a long time ago. Somehow I got it in my head that it was faked recently. I obviously don't understand this whole thing at all. So, if someone has made this point, I've missed it. Is that the give away on this coin, the mint mark? I've "A" - "B" this with two other 1914D's that I send in the same batch. One came back "Cleaned" and the other was an F-15. Anyway. I used my USB microscope and frankly I can't see any difference in the shape of the mint mark. Obvious I need a few lessons on what to look for. What I did see was the position of the mint mark. On the "fake" one it does seem to be lower than on my other two coins. |

The coin has been cleaned. You should have rinsed off the surface debris with water before submission!
The MM is suspect, it's much lower than usual and the shape is off.

Mag glass shows a V or Y after the S in Trus. Not where the T should be but further down a speck.
