Yup, definitely looks like a split after strike cent. Very cool coin!

Could this be the end cut off the rob that was not discarded and sent into the die with another planchet. There is a defining ring around the reverse side.

That makes sence but how do you explain the ring is that the same cause.

In 1944 the mint was required to mix spent cannon shells and other military ordinance brass with the metal used to strike cents. They had issues getting the mix right and there are a fair number of lamination errors that year. Yours looks like an extreme example, very nice. As to the ring, my guess would be a byproduct of the upsetting machine. BTW, blanks aren't cut off of rods, they are punched out of sheets or strips, kind of like a cookie cutter.
