So the seller doesn't have much more idea about this than we do. Although, if billon, it might explain some verdigris.

Could we start by getting a consensus from the forum on what the first and fourth letter in the obverse legend is? Stylized N? Stylized R? Has anyone seen any other coins with this odd letter, that might help us pin down a geographic area?

think it may be german the inscription may read RHARDV SIDEWAYS 'S' WHICH IN GERMAN IS V V

It does have similarities to crusader coins

All I can come up with is that it has similarities to early French coins (9th Century) or it is a coin of
EBE(RHARDVS) (Hippoltstein) (Salzburg) of which I cannot find a similar image.
