On second thought ... Can I have a close up of the date on your coin?

Here's a large shot of the obverse.

Looks like a N-12 R.1. Although, the base of the 1 almost looks re-punched which would make it a little more interesting than your typical N-12. My eyes are probably just playing tricks on me.

It does appear as though the 1 is repunched. Looking at it through a loupe and it appears as though it could be repunched. There is a definite line beneath the one for sure. What would this mean in terms of the rarity?

not sure how I feel about this being the N12, die lumps under the ear lobe are a main feature of this variety. See http://www.gothicstamps.com/php/vie...itemid=41144

So, there you go srs77, would you like to be able to attribute these beautiful coins by yourself, or, do you want others to do it for you. I'm telling you, you're missing out on great fun. And, by the way, no disrespect to both robbudo or downtownsf for trying to help you as this is very nice of them to take their time.

Wow, I didn't realize that I couldn't ask questions. Maybe next time you should just keep to yourself instead of invading a thread where a question was asked. Rude and condescending is how I would describe your post here.

To those that have attempted to help - I THANK YOU! I always thought this was a place where you could ask questions and learn. So if you've provided assistance (Robbudo and downtownsf) again, I thank you. For 1893s, I'd just appreciate you stay away from my threads..

I agree with srs77. I see folks asking for help with attribution all the time. some folks do not have the knowledge or resources to do this. robbudo and downtownsf would not have offered input if they did not want to. if fact, if you read the original post srs77 was not asking for an attribution, he just asked about the placement of the date and if it was common.

I understand where 1893S is coming from but this is also a learning site with a common interest where we enjoy sharing our knowledge and helping others by sharing it. this would be like not asking for grade assistance on this thread, same thing.

if folks want to respond to the request for help and opinions, they will. there is even a special subcategory for variety and attribution. maybe the post belongs there, however, his prime question was regarding grade. keep the hobby alive folks...

nice post panzaldi. I also agree totally with srs77. 1893S likes to come on here and act all knowing. He berated guys like me who like to buy inexpensive coins to either keep or resell at a small profit. Acted like it was beneath his lofty collector standards. I would ignore his comments.

Thanks Jerry and Panzaldi. I appreciate your comments. I went back and looked at 1893s past remarks and he/she follows the same MO a lot. He is, in my books, officially ignored.

Srs77...I appreciate these kind of threads because I don't know Shinola about large cents but I'm quickly learning with the help of everyone here. Not only does it help you but it helps all of us that follow along. I'm glad I found this place.

What 1893s said about books is correct. I'm down to just needing the Noyes books and John D. Wrights "The CENT Book. I've got all the rest, makes my copper library worth a lot more than the coins I have now. But in the future, I will purchase the varieties I really want and need instead of just randomly buying all sorts of stuff. The books are great values that will only help you in the long run.

These later dates are sure hard to identify is what I'm learning, at least in any grade below EF.

Agreed. I used to be one of those who would buy coins haphazardly based upon condition alone. I am now more aware of the different varieties that are available for most "common" type coins.

For the education that I have received here within the CCF, I am very thankful and wish to continue learning from those who provide their "breadth of experience".

I think it boils down to how serious a collector you want to be. Not everyone wants to spend several hundred dollars on the books mentioned. Even if you have the books you have to have a very good eye for details to correctly attribute the coins. I see nothing wrong with asking for some help occasionaly on coins that you have a question on. Most of the time you will get excellent diagnosis and advice from people who know a lot more than you do about whatever type of coin you are asking about.
