depending how picky you want to be, technically isn't EVERY coin a variety?

I don't get the whole thing either... but to each his own.

personally if it isn't blatantly obvious with the naked eye I don't think I would pay any premium

jg86, I'm a photographer, and was lucky to have that example to photograph.

Thanks... it would have been much easier, and the results much better if I didn't have to go through 2 layers of plastic.

Regarding the 1955 25c with double die reverse, I was able to image a raw coin without any plastic between the camera and coin:

I don't personally acknowledge unintentional errors for collecting purposes, and I don't seek out varieties to sell unless there is significant demand. IMHO, a minting error does not create a sub category of a given coin. I acknowledge mint marks and years, nothing more (for collecting).

i have this one and I been told its worthless doubling I see no difference between 1955 and this one

Based on the guideline developed by the coin collectors in the US the loonie has traits of die related doubling which means it is "good" doubling.

That does not automatically translate into worthiness though. That's what I have learnt through hard lessons in collecting.

"Popular"

Based on what everyone is seems to be saying I would think appearance without the aid of any magnification is important.

So the one that I do not really get is the:

1974 Winnipeg Dollar with all its varieties. You need a powerful loop to even see some of the differences in these varieties.

I really don't get the big deal over double or triple HP on the 1937-39-45 or the 1947 Canadian silver dollars. I would not buy one just for a double or triple HP

While I do understand it, I don't care for the NSF and SF varieties on early Elizabethan coins.
