@ Carlo D I commend you on your loyalty to your long time friend Klous, It is very Australian to look after your mates I have absolutely NO idea as to who you are and your reputation, I am merely a small time collector that spends a meagre 10-15k a year on the coins that I desire. I do NOT travel in the high and mighty circles of the coin elite in Australia, In fact up to a few years ago I never even talked to another collector. I do also believe in a great Australian tradition of keeping the Buggers honest and I have always done that with a passion . I had the opportunity to meet face to face with one of the Australian members on this site and was totally impressed with his honesty, care and regard for this hobby and you ignored his input into this debate THIS bloke is SO unassuming but I imagine that he would have more integrity and knowledge about coins (not only Australian) than any other person I have met or talked to. AS I am only a "Pseudo Numismatic" , What the heck would I know anyway

For those that don't know who Carlo is ( like trout), he is a regular contributor to Coin And Banknote Magazine and a long time collector of pre decimal coins.

after reading all these posts I now fully understand why PCGS is growing stronger every year in australia , PCGS gives more power to the buyer and less power to the untrustworthy dealers , the old business model of getting a coin and cleaning it for sale and to profit (average 200% mark up ) from unsuspecting buyers , is taken away from the dealer , PCGS dealers only work on a 15 - 25 % mark up and therefore have to be more savy with what they buy and sell , the old way of buying a coin as A\UNC shining it up real nice and selling as UNC is history

Went to the ANDA Sydney Coin Show (15 Sept.'13). I saw more slabbed Aussie coins than ever before. Main seller was Pacific Rim Coins. This business has been buying as many Pre decimal AU and better grade Aussie coins as they can get their hands on. They go raw to the U.S. in bulk, where they are graded and slabbed by PCGS. They are re marketed back in Oz for a significant amount above their raw grades. That premium price is higher than what the premium would be in the U.S. for the slabbing. Fortunately for me, I'm not really into pre dec Oz coins these days, so have no interest in the Pacific Rim stock. Also fortunately for me I'm into ancient coins. Grading for those has a lot more to do with, than strictly condition. With ancients perhaps condition only accounts for half or less of the grading consideration. That is why there are not many TPG's into ancient coins. I would find it VERY irksome to have half of my collection in marked up mylar 2x2's, and half of the collection in slabs. It is very difficult to write the purchase details and attribution information on a slab. I will keep my grading opinions for my own coins for myself. Especially with my own ancients, I think I am capable of a fairer opinion.

Sel I have a few coins in slabs and I am happy to store them that way. There are special boxes that hold 20 slabs and it is easy to put a piece of paper with the details under them. It won't be more than a small part of your collection as the cost limits it to the pricy coins (rare dates, errors, high grades). In my albums (the cheaper unslabbed coins)I even slip in a bit of paper to mark the fact that for the hundreds of 2x2s in the album there is a choicer example of that date in the safe. If you can afford to have half your collection in slabs then you can afford to store them.

This is an excerpt of a blog sent from the Sydney ANDA Show Sadly, there were a number of dealers who did not attend this year. John Watson from Melbourne, a perennial favourite at ANDA shows (his tables are frequently swamped by bargain-hunting collectors), John Eccles from New Zealand, the ebullient Klaus Ford (whose famously shiny coins were noticeably absent), and of course the Royal Australian Mint all could not attend.

trout relax mate, a lot of people are intimidated by the tort system of suing for slander/defamation that is why bullies use it as a threat. just focus on the facts. a dealer is selling coins that have been cleaned in some way or another by him and he is not acknowledging this fact when questioned on it directly. when pushed by people with knowledge and experience he is referring to the cleaning process as "conservation" now when people buy coins from Klaus Ford they have to ask themselves the question "has this coin been cleaned?" and consider this fact when deciding what to pay
