I see that Mike's Saturday talk about counterfeit coins was mentioned in the Saturday Toronto Star on page GT6 in the GTA section.... A pretty good write-up.

Mike gave a very nice talk, and handed around some samples to look at, and had a whole table of other examples, including some very disturbing SML counterfeits. The RCM really needs the get on the ball, or their worldwide reputation as the safe bullion choice will evaporate very quickly. The ebay.ca rep on hand, who talked briefly about their efforts cooperating with Mike to keep counterfeits off ebay (HUNDREDS of listing removed! You're a hero Mike), thinks an RFID tag inside the coin is ultimately where things will have to go. Of course, the problem there is the paranoia of tracking that would raise. Edited by dialog_gvf

The coolest thing about Coin Expo, is you can go up and meet SPP-Ottawa, t_y and nickelsguy at the Sherwood Park Pennies (SPP) booth. You know when you're a top collector, when you have enough high-end doubles and triples to open up a booth at a key coin show. :)
A great thing they were doing this show, is they cracked a never opened 1965 nickel bag, and were letting kids who come to the table draw one themselves, and then they put it in a 2x2 for them. "You are the first human that has ever touched that coin". And the kids' faces light up.
So, encouraging new numismatists in a big way. Fantastic guys!

Made it to the show today. It was nice, but I left empty-handed. While there were plenty of displays, and no shortage of coins (saw some nice 1921 5 cents, a 1969 large date, amongst others), I found that all the older MS coins were all 64+. I have a couple wholes in my KGV quarter collection that I was hoping to fill with some 62s or 63s, but was unable to. Nearly made a deal for a 1921 quarter in 62 (PCGS), but I wasn't convinced it would get a 62 from ICCS, and while the seller was being reasonable working out a trade+cash deal, he said he didn't have much flexibility on the price tag (trends).
Canadian Coin and Currency had a 1936 Dot quarter in MS63 that has a massive die crack on it, but only half of the "bar" is complete. They don't have it listed as a Dot/Bar (cause it isn't I presume), but it might be of interest to someone on here (it's on their website).
Went over and briefly introduced myself to SPP - probably should have told him my name rather than my handle on here lol. Was t_y the "toonie guy" at his table?

It was my first time at the coin expo and it had a totally different vibe then that of the old show near the airport.
I ended up leaving empty handed though as Several of the items I was looking for were severally overpriced :(
I thoroughly enjoyed walking the floor and enjoyed Nickelsguy Counterfeit Seminar.
It was nice to see Henry N again and was a pleasure meeting Zonad, Nickelsguy and SPP and being able to put an actual face to
names/handles.

Was short in time, but still was able to get couple of neat (for me) items. Started and ended at SPP both...was nice to speak and to see the smile of the kids - they got nickel "voyagers" as a change.

I spent less than 1% of money I had budgeted for the show but time spent with other collectors/friends I would value as priceless. Thanks to the ones who introduced themselves especially! Fellow at back of room at the counterfeit seminar...focus that energy toward the mint and RCMP and your MP!

As a collector, my position is not one to be envious of. It was a fairly busy show, I bought a 5 gallon pail full of nickel dollars at face value from a dealer, another dealer brought me a mint bag of 1960 5-cent coins (still sealed) and a another dealer brought me a handful of errors - stuff like that makes it worthwhile to have a table. I really liked that the collectors, most of whom are friends, tend to migrate to my table. But, I hate being behind the table, because I have to constantly interrupt my conversations to deal with everyone else who comes to the table - which I have to do to pay for the table, and to promote the hobby to collectors. The hardest part is when everyone disappears for beers at lunchtime... and I am stuck behind the table...  Bill Cross came to my table, at a really busy time, and I really regret not having the time to sit and talk with him. Another friend popped by (Canadian Beaver Hunter from this site) and I really wanted to have a beer with him... but couldn't... As Zonad already said, it is seeing and spending time with the friends that make the show... I am really looking forward to the RCNA next year, where I can attend the show as a collector... It was wonderful to spend so much time with SPP, TY, BiB and Zonad. I was able to spend a little time with John 100 and dialogue as well (I hope you enjoy the error....they are hard to find with both like that.)! I was disappointed not to meet jg86 and others. I fumbled (embarrassingly) with the operating system of the lap top provided at the seminar. One hour did not even allow me to scratch the surface of the fakes. Talks are already underway for the next one which I hope is much more detailed. I made a new contact with the Metro Police. All in all a very successful weekend.
My heart felt thanks to both Toronto Coin Expo and CAFNE for allowing me to present what I did. See y'all in the spring. MM

nickelsguy - I was really looking forward to your presentation, and was hoping to get a moment to talk to you. I came to Toronto with my wife and kids (3 and 5) and left them at the Eaton Centre around 11:00 - 11:30 to head to the show. I walked around looking at every display two or three times, before discussing possible deals with three dealers. However, it wasn't even 1:00 by the time I was done. I'm not very comfortable in Toronto, and the idea of killing another hour with nothing to do was just too much! Especially with the amount of cash I had in my pocket.
Next time I'll plan my timing better and hopefully we can meet!

Hi jg86  ...reading through the posts here again I just realized that I am the dealer you almost made a deal with for the 1921 quarter. Sorry we couldn't pull something together. But now that I'm not wearing my "dealer hat" maybe we can work something out. If not the '21, maybe something else. PM or email me if you wish. It was nice to meet you. Its always great to put a face to name here on the forum. |

I was looking forward to dig into the municipal token bag of SPP and get some friendly advise from TY on some toonies but last minute issues hampered being there. Hopefully looking forward to meeting the great collectors at another forum.
