Dare I ask...what are they? They look like commemorative silver dollars of some sort, but I don't get over to the US very much...sooo, what are they?

1986 Statue of Liberty proof silver commemorative dollars. Same silver content as a Morgan or Peace dollar.

I think it's kind of great that many tellers and other bank people are not Numismatically smart.

It's funny. If I was a teller and got something this unusual (for them), I would at least read it and hopefully a lightbulb would go on..ah, silver!

Yeah Carl, good for us and awesome score!

vermontensium: There's nothing on the coin that says that's it's silver, unlike ASEs. I had never seen this design before, so my only tip off was the edge.
shootnstars: Right place, right time indeed!

The strangest thing about it was that the teller said she got them from a customer who said they got them from a Las Vegas casino as part of cashing out. I think that's what she said at least. Very strange circumstances for coins to get into circulation temporarily.

Congrats Dude!

I would have suspected a UNC silver coin to make it that far through the banking system, but to get 2 silver proofs coins at face value, not melt, is incredible!

You should have bought a bunch of lottery tickets that day too.

This gives us all hope we can get a great score from our local bank too.

Thanks for sharing your great news, it turned my frown upside-down.

Awesome score.

I have only found a 6 or 7 commemorative non silver halves and a 1982 Washington half roll hunting but never anything like that from a tellers tray.

I would keep them as everytime you look at them you will remember the story of how you got them.

The coin shop was lowballing you at $16 though, silver spot is 21.80 right now these typically sell for $22-25 on ebay, they aren't the most collected of the commemoratives and really don't command much of a premium over spot but they should have at least offered you $20.

Sir Dizzy - $16 would not be a low ball number. The US silver dollar even though it made of 90% silver, the silver it contains is .77 of a Troy Ounce. So 77% of $21.80 is $16.79. The dealer is strictly using spot value instead of the numismatic value to buy the coin. He's trying to get it at a price where there is a little meat on the bone to make a few bucks. One more item of consideration, the coins do not appear to have OGP or COA's. Which can effect the the coins price.
