I can understand why this coin might be seen as AU58 by some. The wartime dimes had poor die detail around Mercury's head. Compare with MS grades struck 10 or 15 years earlier.

Borderline for FSB on the middle bands.
Can't really see any nicks or scratches anywhere, small bumps on the leading edge of the wing (obv.), and on the lower diagonal strap (rev.).

MS63.

I'll let this go a few more posts, I want more guesses. They're all over the map here.

I see no reason why this shouldn't grade a 66, unless the toning is hiding something!

Only thing keeping me from guessing MS66 was the big hit on the reverse below the center bands on the lower strap. Since the hit is central to the coin I feel it might keep it out of higher grade area like 66 or better, other than that the coin is absolutely gorgeous!

Is anyone close?

I was thinking that maybe I am way off, but I'm sticking with high AU, although after taking a second look at the reverse, there is some (machine/strike?) doubling on the "D" in DIME.

Assuming all the guesses include FB, since I gave that much in the OP, there has been at least one correct guess.

Got it for $15 at Philly. It will get a gold bean, so... that's why I bought it, lol.

Those small bumps cruelled it, otherwise 66 or 7. Pity.

I still think it's at least a MS64 or 65 SB remember this is in an old original holder, and most crackouts from these holders go up today by one or two grade points, (most not all).
