That is the smiles I was looking for.
I posted 3 of them so far. A guy took a round about shot at my photo skills so I think I am done posting photos on this forum.
I got really mixed results. As others who have sent in AU type coins have seen the scores are all over the place. When you compare to already slabbed coins things don't always match up. I'm guessing there is something they see that I don't. I'm in the beginning/learning part of the game right now. I do this as a hobby so I expect it to cost me money not make me money.
1916D Came back AU55. I thought AU53 at best.
1917 Came back AU58. That is what I thought.
1918S Came back AU 50. I was hoping the weak strike S mint would get this a 53. From other 53/55's I have seen I will take mine.
1920S Came back EF45. This hurt a little. I bought it as an AU50 and this is one that has a pretty wide cost range from EF to AU. Again I would rather have this one then some of the AU50's that are out there.
1933S Came back AU53. I was pulling for 55.
1934S Came back AU50. This was the biggest surprise. I bought it as an AU55+. I have to use this as a research piece to see what happened. It has great luster so they must have seen it as a strong strike that had a lot of wear and I saw it as a weak S mint that would grade higher.
1935S Came back AU50. I thought it was EF45 so this was good to see.
1936S Came back AU55 as guessed. Bought as 58.
1939S Came back AU55 as guessed. Bought as 58.
As for the 1926S and 1928S
Peace dollars those were the biggest surprise. What I saw as bag marks they saw as wear and gave both AU58's. Bad news I overpayed for them. Good news I have great looking AU58's in my Everyman's Collection Registry set.
In the end I am glad I sent everything in. Going forward I will buy fewer raw coins. I know there are some here that swear by their grading abilities, but I will not leave it on my kids to take coins into a dealer and be told everything is average at best when they are really AU+. At least in a slab there is a history of price. I don't think it is going to get cheaper to slab in the future and I think people are getting tired of over grading by dealers so more and more coins are going in.
