I've seen some mintmarks that were crooked. Ask the seller if they can take a better picture. If they can't...I'd hold off and wait for a better example and a little better grade.

The "D" looks weird to me, but I don't look at a whole lot of 14D's.

Slly, I have been looking at your's and then mine. At first glance two things seem to jump out at me. 1st, the deep gouge (?) at the tear duct area of the eye along the nose seems very unusual. Also, the "D" seems to be in the correct location but does not seem to be of the right shape. Mine almost seem square with a slight radius on the top and bottom corners on the right side of the mint mark. At least by the pics, your seem to stand very tall and thin. It may well be the pics, but it really looks different than mine. Anyway, if you could get better pics, I will try again.

I'd pass. You can find a real one for less money.

Not sure this is legitimate -- not sure it's not. The inside opening in the 'D' should have a somewhat triangular shape on an authentic '14-D cent.

I'd pass on it- even if it is legitimate. There's too many heavy marks on the surfaces anyways. If you can take a close-up pic of the mintmark, it might help out with authentication.

I agree with everyone, I'd find another one that is certified by a major TPG.

The pics are quite small to authenticate this coin from ,,Having said that the depression around the D could be signs of tooling ,, its not worth the risk !!

Note Mint marks were place on coins by hand back then so the exact location varies dramitically. I have 10 sets of Lincoln Cents and all 14D's have slight variations in the D location. If your really worried try contacting Chuck at coppercoins.com. Since he has taken 10,000 photos of Lincoln Cents and written two books on them, if he doesn't know, no one does.

The location of the mintmark is good (there are about three or four locations I believe) The shape is a little odd but that could be covered by the fact that it is a well circulated coins. But I don't think the die with the mintmark in that location has the mintmark tipped like that, and I know it doesn't have it appearing to sit in a depression like that. I'm about 80% convinced it's a fake.

It seems to my eyes that the mint mark does not show as much wear as the date and the rest of the coin. Perhaps it was better protected from wear, but it just seems sharply delineated while the numerals in the date have flattened surfaces and rounded edges. A close up would obviously help immensely in determining the authenticity of this coin.

Silly comment (perhaps) but isn't that mintmark too close to Lincoln?
I don't recall seeing one in that position.
But, I could be wrong.

I revisited this and studied the coin again using the zoom on Firefox. At 150% there appears to be a mint mark hiding underneath the "D". In fact, it seems to be an "S" by my eyes. Does anyone else have the ability to magnify this image? If so, please check and let me know if my 53 yr old eyes are playing tricks.
