This is from the first email I received I'm sure its not from metal that was rolled a little to thin cause there would be more of them apparently this is the only one of this 1979 20 cent coin that they know about, I should of checked its metal content before sending it of

I am about 99% convinced this is an elliptical clipped planchet and one of a kind. It's actually quite clear on the obverse strike where the planchet material is missing too. I can see fish tailing on the legends between 6PM and 9PM. And nowhere else. An elliptical clipped planchet is also the most likely explanation for what you're seeing.

You've ruled out it being struck on a foreign planchet. ShaneW's suggestion that it was struck on a split planchet is an interesting one but the coin shows absolutely no resemblance to the several coins of that type that I've seen. Being struck on thin stock isn't a bad idea either but I wouldn't expect it to show fish tailing in one area and not elsewhere.

How much do you think it would sell for at auction?

Not being on a foreign planchet and not being visually spectacular it's not going to command much of a premium. Even though it's an elliptical clip and they are the rarest types of clips it's not a very big one. I'd value it at $50-$100.

Put it on ebay, I reckon you might even get a couple of hundred for it. You only need two people who want it
