Actually I noticed the opposite, but I really only looked at a handful of coins in the 3cs series.
/1/ The NGC grades were lower than Mr. Newman's notes on the envelopes (e.g. "Brilliant Proof" vs. AU55)
/2/ The 3 coins I looked at seriously were all, IMHO, fairly graded.

I won a nice 1846 Tall Date Seated Liberty half at what I thought was a fair price. Not cheap, I didn't expect that. But less than I thought it would bring. NGC AU58 for $835 including shipping. www.ha.com/1190*33706 See what you think. Best Regards, George VDB Coins |

Of course luster is difficult to see. Glad I nabbed it and didn't think the price was too high although I would have dropped out if it went much higher. Best Regards,  George |

Well, after seeing BStrauss's post I took a look at these auctions. I picked up the 1872 Half for $193.50 Numismedia listed the value as $186. So I paid $7.50 for the provenance.  -MV |

Unless I'm missing something? The half dollar listing started out as a BIN when it was first listed and pointed out by BStrauss. Taken down. Put up with a $20 lower BIN price. Taken down again and listed as an auction. |

At the FUN show today, I talked about the Newman auction with a dealer friend. He deals in big ticket stuff, but he said he didn't end up buying a thing at the Newman auction because he knew he'd never turn around and sell it for more. In fact, he didn't think he could break even.
On the other hand, I got to see some of the ultra-rare Newman lots in dealer cases around the bourse. There were some outstanding coins in that group!

I'm not surprised that there were few deals to be had by dealers looking for re-sale. There was a lot of hype for the auction and everything sold for above "retail" for the most part, or the profit margin would have been really slim. I'm also not surprised by those Newman coins on ebay selling for less that the hammer price at Heritage. A lot of eyes were on the Heritage auction, not as many are searching out those coins on ebay. |

There is a perception that ( real time, in person) auctions are places to get good deals. I don't find that to be the case. There are deals, here and there, but most of the time you WILL pay above retail for any given item. I know lots and lots of "bidders" that will bid on something just so someone "else" won't get a lot for a cheap price.
The last auction I went to, the guy I went with started to bid on a lot of 10k Gold Jewelry. I said "why are you bidding on that lot, you don't want it? Yeah, but it was going too cheap". I asked why he cared and said "I don't want anyone but me to get a good deal". Seems there was a lot of that going on.
The Newman auction was no different.
