Sorry for digging this old thread up, but I pulled this coin out and studied on it some more. Those hairlines are so very light . . . . . I bet a bit of tone would obscure them to the point that they would become undetectable. Is there some honorable way to store the coin (in slab) so that it would tone over a period of months or years? Or is even to speak of such blasphemy?!? Delving into the world of doctoring! What say the gallery?

If you ask me, that is a very under graded coin. Maybe you should consider reslabing it or sending it to PCGS.

Actually, I am putting together a submission to PCGS to try to send this week. I suppose I could ask for a crossover at grade. It would only cost me $20 for the grade, $8.00 for the submission category (the only crossover in the bunch), and $24.00 for the return shipping all by it's lonesome. Oh, and 1% of the value. Or I suppose I could crack it out and save the $40.00 in BS charges. Scary to crack it out . . . . anyone think I would get a no grade?

Based on your spectacularly accurate second obverse image, I don't see this one getting a Details grade from PCGS. In fact, I see you building a little value on this semi-key (in grade).
It's a chance, but I'd crack it.

No way that deserves a 62 IMO.

I have looked at one or two Washingtons in my life, and based on your photos that coin looks like an easy 64 with a good shot at a 65

Jon K I would crack that slab. I personally thought MS-65 that NGC might give an MS-64 based upon the huge difference bewteen 64-and 65 on a 36-D. Even after you shot the second picture that highlighted the hairlines I still thought it would get an MS-65. But MS-62 no no and no. If I were to grade it and MS-62 the only way I could do it would be to loupe the coin first and focus on the hairlines and minimizing the luster and eye appeal. So I think that's how they arrive at that one. What a shame they butchered a nice coin.

Well, not the "64" I think it deserves, but I suppose I will be content. Those hairlines are not imaginary . . . . So all in all,
