Brilliant thanks. Just taken off a chunk and it has revealed green flaky stuff. Looking like active BD which is disappointing.

I have a couple of other barbs, they are nothing to write home about, but I love this one. Not sure about any more cleaning, it is like trying to do a jigsaw puzzle without a picture.

Yeup, Victoria laete prin blah blah. Very crude style, perhaps clashed dies. This stuff does turn up in the UK, you'd need to know its find location to know where it was made. Not got one similar from a UK tribe though.

Ben, it came in a lot of uncleaned. Huge encrustations on the reverse, and the obv was not really visible. I cleaned the obv first and it started looking nice. It has taken ages to do the reverse. I have to keep leaving it, in case I get carried away. I think I will leave it as it is now. I have taken a bit more off from the pics shown here.

I wouldnt try and clean it any more....if you have signs of BD, treat it with something to stop the BD taking hold (only if you are familiar with the chemicals used, such as sodium sesquicarbonate or benzotriazole), which are nasty. Heat can halt the process, but either way ensure the coin is bone dry before storing/displaying. It doesn't look too severe to me.

I have some Verdi-Care that I got from the US. I suspect that there is more under the surface. Might clean what I can see, bake in the oven and apply the Verdi-Care. Or something like that.

It will stop you worrying about what may be happening to the coin under spots of oxidisation if you treat it, so may be a good idea.

Looks like I'm late to the party. Both coins could possibly be Vandalic, but there is no way to fully attribute these kinds of crude imitatives to the Vandals or another tribe. Nowadays its become a trend for tiny late Roman imitatives to be labeled as Vandal (or some other tribe). If you want Vandal, stick to types unique to them.

Thanks VK. It is 17mm 2.78g so not the smallest coin I have. I don't particularly want a Vandal, but thought I had better check it out with you guys after I noticed possible similarities. I am quite happy to keep it as a barbarian imitative.
