there is a reason it was made now I just have to work it out need a expert to say it was a die first who would that be any idea ? then get the medal tested to see what its made of then chuck it in the bin as it to hard

shainw it depends on were you live to have it looked at by professional dealer. there is a diagnostic pathology lab in Wagga that test metal aswell as other stuff all you do is feel out a submission form and take it in.

I was told the other day by a old fella who was a guard at the mint in the 60s that he heard of plated coins as a way of steeling silver and gold from the mint they would plate them and re melt them when the got them out was there a plating plant at the mint by any chance its of to the XRF machine Thursday at lunchtime any thought on whats under the coating I say silver if it silver is there any other silver pennys or has anyone ever heard of one and if it is what would it be worth any takers

test done still have not got a clue this is a normal 1952 penny  this is another 1952 penny for a control  this is the coating or plating  this is the silver edge

Good Morning Shanew. I would Leave the coin the way it is, It was made with a purpose & is the way it was meant to be  . It is Still a great Find & a  Mystery jpl..

 would any one have any thing on this pattern trial cupro nickel in 1947 so they were playing with cupro nickel well before 1966 here is a link to the cupro trial http://museumvictoria.com.au/collec...stralia-1946 and one more thing that has me puzzled is if they were faked why has only one ever been found has any one heard or seen any other magnetic penny the strike is to good to be a fake and still the question why fake a 1952 Melbourne die penny

I'd say only one has been discovered because most people would be quick to dismiss a circulated common date penny without so much as a second thought.

Hey, I think I have the answer.  Just watching the Penn and Teller show and a magician did a trick using coins and cards. The secret of the trick turned out to be that he was wearing a ring on each hand and both the rings and the coins were magnetised to enable the trick to work. Your coin could be an ex-trick coin. There were plenty of side show magicians in the early days - and probably just as many hustlers as well - and the coins had to look real for the trick to work.

it is in Canberra still with tony byrnes he is still looking into it I have no idea its the coating that is magnetic not the coin the coin is cupro/nickel we no that so fare

yes I know that the coin is cupro/nicel its been tested as 80%copper 20% nickel and the plating on the out side is the magnetic component
