Depends on whether you are talking about owning the coin or buying/selling it.

Owning the coin, I couldn't care less about boxes and packaging most of the time. I actually store the packaging separately for individual coins (I keep sets together).

But when buying or selling, a coin without proper packaging almost always has less value.

I want to have everything that was sent from the mint originally. The packaging has the original barcode and description.I did notice that the new $100 grizzly coins have the COA printed on the packaging itself. I guess that's one way of keeping the certificate with the original packaging!

But again its just my opinion

Hi pocketchange50!

Let's face it, it's really the coins we all enjoy.

Like CC-Ottawa says, you can keep everything, but store the boxes, packaging etc. separately. If you ever choose to sell a coin you'll still have the original clutter that goes with it.

I like the clamshells because they serve as somewhere to store the coins safely, or even to display. It is nice, though, to see coins of the same set all displayed together in one box. Imagine the bird quarters all together in the O Canada 2013 12 coin wood box.

But, the fact that every clamshell is the same, then there is no uniqueness to the cases. Sometimes the slips/boxes are different - like the Autumn Bliss, or last years Silver gold-plated penny, etc., which is nice to see. The 2012 Praying Mantis comes in a black clamshell - it's my only non-maroon case. I wish they would make more of these black cases as they look very nice with silver.

So, I'm kind of with the majority of the people here. I think the COA is a necessity, but when displaying coins it's really up to the individual. However you think storing/displaying your coins is going to be the best, is probably going to be the best.

That said, I still keep all of my original Mint packaging just because it came from the Mint with my coin.

Anything I buy I want in perfect condition. If the item came with a box I want the box. As an example awhile back I got a great deal on some 2006 Lunar dogs from the RCM (sterling). The original issue was around $80 - $90 dollars CDN. I got them for $40.00 each. The coins are perfect, the boxes are perfect, but the cardboard outer box has some scuff marks. The marks bother me so much that I will probably get rid of the coins in time.

Just me... I'm a bit of a detail nut.
Rest in Peace

We are actually lucky that the tax man hasn't caught onto this. In the case of royal crown whiskey, that used to come in a velvet bag at the liqueur store, they were given the option pay taxes on the bag...or don't give it away. Some of these so called free cases have suggested value of $200 (zodiac coins) and are rightly so, a taxable item. I think the discussion of their values should be minimized lest that one day we get caught, and the mint starts not only charging for them, but taxes too.

When I started the discussion was to get people's reply to 1) how important are the cardboard boxes, I'm not speaking to clamshell or COA at this point. 2) for resales, in case you get tired of the coin. I know I have tired of some of my coins I bought when I first started buying silver Nclt coins. I have very limited space and I'm drowning in coins and boxes. I'm just not sure what to do, as I have both circulation and Nclt. I like the coin easels I see lately. I also wonder as I see silver dollar collectors put coins in cardboard flips or albums. I'm thinking if I used albums what do I do with the rest. So far this has been most insightful as I'm still new to collecting. The collecting part is easy, but storage/ display are another story. A question for people who have the Great Lakes Sub, what do you plan on doing with clamshells once the case arrives?

I agree with everyone, if you want to just display the coins in a case or holder of your liking, but I keep the packaging and OOA's together as well, and prefer them in pristine condition.

But yes, as NuMoosematist says we all love the coins and thats what counts.

People gave opinion about this topic here: https://goccf.com/t/161607&SearchTerms=slleve

Most of them (including me) consider that a NCLT product has to have all the original stuff, if not, you have to ask for a discount.

I am American but I have a lot of Canadian coins. I hate all the extra crap. First thing I do is toss it. It just takes up space.

MC members get free shipping.

If there is an argument for a tax on a free box, then why not tax on free shipping?

If the government can start applying arbitrary values to things for tax purposes, maybe the next thing they can do is decide you're underpaid, and charge you income tax on what they think you SHOULD be making. darn unfair you're such a wuse and don't demand your employer bump up the government's take.

@pocket change 50 Usually when they do a subscription, you don't get clamshells. You get the box to store all the coins in the place of that box. I'm not getting the Great Lakes coin though, so I'm not too sure how they will be sent. For the 2013 O Canada set, you just get the coins in their capsules with COA and eventually will get a box to display all of them - in the place of individual clamshells.

Lake sub coins actually came with a clamshell and outer box.

Personally, mine is stored with all my other mint packing in a plastic tote (well several of them) in a closet.
