Looks like you've got an off metal strike there. Put it on a scale if you've got one. That's a rarity. I would repost your coin in the Canadian errors section If I was you. Don't suppose there's many errors like that from the last few years. The world mints have got pretty good at keeping them out.

It could have come into contact with something that caused a chemical reaction leading to a change in color. You see oddly toned coins from time to time that were washed, buried, heated etc...
But you never know, weight would be a good start. from the angle of the photo it looks to be a different size than the comparison coin, is this actually the case?

The comparison coin doesn't look Canadian... Am I right? Also, it has the color of a Canadian loon but that couldn't be possible. The blank loonie wouldn't fit into the collar. I'd have to say PMD |

The comparison coin appears to be a 1992 British penny.
Perhaps the quarter is a long way from home and someone plated it to raise it's value from virtually nothing to very little.
If the shoe were on the other foot and the penny was for sale here, what would it be worth? Virtually nothing. Plate it and you may generate some interest.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Check it with a magnet... if it is not magnetic, then weigh it.

I know this is an old thread. I was not the OP, but I did make a comment back when it was fresh. I was going through my quarters today and was looking at the non frosted front fin variety I have. Seven years have gone by and I have not seen the variety listed anywhere. Why would it not be as significant as, for example, the 1976 Nickel Dollar with attached and detached jewels?

Hi punman, it might will somday be part of charlton catalog, like the extra sail 2012 hms shanon, it took about 7 or 8 years to be part of the charlton.

Hi Punman, thank you for reviving this thread. I listed 8 about a year ago on ebay and just finally sold 1 last month. Below is the link, you might like my description. I even include the two BU versions released from the mint and the die variety all for $12 free shipping! I'm almost giving them away and still hardly any interest, I don't understand this hobby sometimes. Maybe I should pursue getting them listed somewhere, but then I might regret letting them go so cheap  .
