Quote: Has anyone viewed the trial patterns? Not them unfortunately. This piece looks more like a cast than struck, any way to get a close up of the lone obverse mark? What's the stuff over Monticello? Clouds? Almost looks like it may have been struck over another coin or medallion perhaps? A Monticello token of some sort but the fact of the IGWT and EPU motto, the inclusion of the FIVE CENTS say otherwise. Very interesting what ever it is.

An ultra high res shot of the 7 o'clock position on the "blank" side may reveal some info. One thing to note...on the Monticello side..there is a die crack at 1 o'clock, which makes me think that there were many of these struck in order to crack a die as well as some die wear evident around the rim area. Seems to me that this wasn't a low volume issue

I looked at the description of when I bought it. It says that it was a US test nickel from the Interbranch Mint for Toronto, On. So would that make this a fantasy piece. I do not know if the US allowed outside mints strike US test coins. I was thinking the same as (westcoin) stated about putting the EPU and IGWT and 5 CENTS on the coin.

My guess would be that this is a privately made example of one of the 1938 Jefferson nickel proposed designs. There are about four or five of the contest entries that have been made by various companies during the past ten years or so.

In reviewing all of the previous posts in this thread, I have a feeling that this piece is not a product of the U.S. Mint. I will admit that my knowledge in this area is scant.

It looks bronze and I have to say, the U.S. Mint would do a better job with the devices. This is too crude to be from the U.S. Mint.

Nice! I knew I had seen this before - I follow that seller's auctions regularly, but this wouldn't have interested me enough to bid. Good work.
