For the entire 1-cent denomination, wouldn't you want to do 1793-date?

Yeah, probably. That would be ridiculously tough though.

I suppose having the entire denomination of cents would include large cents as well! Perhaps a bad choice of words, but I was trying to come up with a short way to say it in the title :)

Perhaps something a little bit more realistic would have been "denominations of like size coinage". Small cents, nickels, and perhaps quarters could be done by an average collector over many, many years of collecting?

Prethen, those odd denominations would be really fun to collect!! By your wording, you have all of those? That is impressive!!

I would focus on one Type at a time. Once you have it done move on to the next one. Then you can decide how far you want to take this collection.

Good Luck!

I have thought about a dollar coin collection from 1878 to present, the big stumbler would be the 1895 Morgan, but if limited to business strikes only that would solve that problem.

Go for it FroDaddy!!

FroDaddy: Yep, they're mine. They've taken awhile. I'm very passionate about the odd type stuff and they're not all that difficult to put together. You should consider trying a set!

I'm glad I posted this! I just discovered in my collection that I have a complete set of Jefferson nickels from 1938-1963, and nearly a complete from 1964 to the late 1980's. I remember that my father purchased the 1938-63 set for me since I couldn't find those dates in pocket change, and I put the other together from pocket change on my own when I was a kid. So with little effort I could get the Jefferson set together, although most are low grades.

I also found that I have a LOT of lincolns as well; most of the memorials and many of the wheaties. Again I accumulated these mostly when I was a kid just starting out collecting. Most of these came from my Dad's pocket change... but he never gave any of them to me, he always made me trade him; even the pennies! Ahh the memories

Maybe if the funds run dry for the 7070 I could switch gears with either nickels or small cents! Or maybe an odd denomination set!

I can actually say, at one time, I had all the nickels ever minted by the U.S. except the proof Shield nickels. All the business strikes were there! And that was a major feat due to the fact the only nickel I really care for are the Indian/buffalo series. Also owned all the Morgan dollars except the 1895 Proof but those too are a thing of the past as well! Way too many series to collect and, after falling to the Darkside in 2002, my interests changed drastically! When you get on the world level it is one coin at a time and believe me when I say just acquiring a single, desired coin from some countries is quite an endeavor but still very rewarding! And, it does help to have connections all over the world!!!

I think that would be a fun task. I hope to one day get one every busness strike coin that was minted. I know there few hundred that might be almost imposible but I think if I could get 80% that would be great. I have along way to go but I have ready of a few people doing that and thought that would eb fun. I am just working one set at a time and we will see what happens after 40 more years of collection. I am 32 now so and have been seriusly collecting for 2 years so who know what might happen. I think it is alway fun to set goals in coin collecting that way you never fun out of thing to do.

I may be close to what your suggesting but since most of my coins are in Whitman Classic Albums it would be difficult to tear apart to make a set as you suggested. I have 96 of such Albums and most are complete. Also, have 9 boxes of 2x2's of miscellaneous duplicates.

Just carl, did you say you were looking to adopt? I don't think my current parents will mind since I have not lived with them for 20 years.....

I'll be happy just to put together a type set, an example of each type of coin minted in the US.

I have all of the Two Cent Piece, I lack just the 1884 and 1887 of having all the Three Cent pieces, I have all the nickels and all the Twenty Cent Pieces. I lack about four dates of having all the one cent pieces (and they are all common dates)

As I live in the Netherlands, I regard Lincoln differently as the members of this community. Over here it is the other way around. There has been leftovers from American travellers throughout times and you can easily buy wheat cents and Jefferson nickels very cheap within world kilogrammes. I found for example a 1909 VDB cent in a normal quality, nearly uncirculated, two years ago for an amount of 3 euro (approximately 2.75 us dollars), therefor I am happy to know that people pay large prices for such a Wheat cent in the U.S.A. Maybe you ought to go to the Netherlands for holidays, you can find large quantities of US money with dealers in shops and flea-markets. But: you yourself are the judge to decide whether you take the money and run or leave it behind, as for grading we use poor, very fine, uncirculated, brilliant uncirculated and proof... Want adventure and no jungle? Come to Holland...

The House Jefferson lived when he was ambassador to the United States still exists (The Hague), you can see the other side of Ellis Island at the Hotel New York in Rotterdam (former president Bill Clinton took residence over there a little while ago), docking bay for Holland-America Line, and also the Church of the Pilgrim Fathers is very nearby, in which the voyage of the Mayflower was arranged in 1619-1620.
