Quote: Nevol, the McDonalds guide is pricing the common version, not the long denticle. Erics price is more realistic for MS62 long denticle. It isn't rare, only scarce. To be worth 3 grand it would need to be far superior to Erics coin and it isn't. Oh, OK. Thanks for pointing that out.

I have a few of these, I am a little amazed at what they are worth....because when I looked for them actively over a year or two I found a number. Including three in mint state of which I still have two. Nice variety with an interesting story.

Here's the only one I can lay my hands on right now it's raw and probably MS62'ish. The other is in a PCGS MS63BN slab. The third UNC one I've found was in an NGC MS62BN slab that didn't have a hope of ever grading at PCGS. That one I got rid of a few years back.

I think yours is a little better DVCollector. There's nothing like finding a scarce variety cheaply!

Thanks Mark! I've been lucky finding predecimal coins here.

Excellent :) I bet someone who knows about US varieties would probably do OK down here too!

Mark, it might be easier to find US varieties in Aus, since fewer look for them. Robster, nice on! I like all the varieties I find--even the "ordinary" ones.

Would I be right in thinking that all these 1942 long denticle half pennies have a dropped 'A'? I have had four and all have exhibited this feature. Anyone have a normal one?

Given that the reverse is the reverse of the 1943I half penny would you expect to see the dropped A on that too? I don't have a picture of one to compare.

All the 1942 I half penny coins I have seen have the 'A' in the normal position. However, I've checked my 1943 I normal and 1942 I 'long denticles' coins. They all have the dropped 'A' but they do show differences in the lettering. If the 1943 master die was used for the 1942 I 'long denticles' coins, then as I understand it, the features should be the same unless different master dies were used. I have included images to show the differences in my coins - particularly in the letters 'A' and 'U' of 'Australia'. The serifs are different. 1943 I 1942 I Long 1943 I 1942 I Long This would seem to support the idea of two master dies for the 1943 I half penny.
