Hey there, Met.
It's a tetradrachm from Alexandria, Egypt. Not sure who; a later one. I'll take a closer look.

I think it's Diocletian, since you can see "...TIANOC CEB" on the obverse. Reverse is Tyche. I don't have a reference book and online resources are spotty.
"L I" is the regnal year, so that would be year 10, or 293/4 AD.

That brilliant TIF, thank you. I was too early - was going through the Claudius II section and before. Where is the best site for relevant info on the years TIF?

http://tetradrachm-alexandria.blogs...anus?zx=9abd116288387845This site is devoted to alexandrian tets. The specific page linked is to Diocletian, although no year 10 coins are depicted. If you scroll down, the column on the right side eventually lists the years. "L" means "year" and the list correlates letters with year. A = year 1, B = year 2, delta = year 4, etc. I = 10.

Emmett's book is apparently the best for these coins, although Milne is often cited.

Yep thats a rudder, going to be on the lookout for these now, the other provincial stuff I have is nowhere near as chunky as this. Came with a few nice bits as well, a silver denarius of I think Domitian with the she wolf with Romulus and Remus on the reverse, got it in base metal a few times but quite thrilled to have it in silver. My first Republic denarius as well, it has a hole in it and I don't have the i.d. yet but I like it and I got my first Hadrian with s.c. in a wreath as well, all in all well chuffed!

That looks good to me! Is there any way to download or access a pdf of the 2 books/catalogues?
