I think that problem is not only for Canada, but for every country.
What I do is simply avoid any seller that use that option.

Is it an option, or the default?
I've seen coins go through several BIN cycles and had that disappear and the reappear.
And I have seen the fee all over the place. One was over $40. The old piece of the action for brokering the item through customs when USPS/CP is frequently free, scam.
I won't purchase from any seller using UPS. Nor will I touch one of these auctions.
Alas, I suspect that while continuing to practically giving away services to Americans, US Post will boost and boost rates to Canada. Complain to your congressman, oh wait ...

@North_of_49 - not really. There are other auction and sales sites (eCrater, Google Products, ...) out there is nothing else anywhere close to the sheer volume of ebay. ebay's not bad for buyers but sellers tend to get the short end of the stick. Buyer protection is pretty reliable. As for shipping, I've never gotten too worked up about it one way or the other. I would just look at the total cost to me for getting the coin in hand; how much of that was item vs shipping I didn't really care. If it's a $100 coin and one guy is selling it for $30 + $30 shipping and the other guy is selling it for $60 + free shipping there's no difference from my point of view as the buyer. However see previous comment about the seller getting the short end of the stick...

when I see an item I want with global shipping I send the seller a message on how global shipping will hurt their sales as I wont bid either,,,,most change this for me,,,i have also started using "thanks for not choosing global shipping" as feedbacks I leave. i think if we all do this and ask the sellers to also spread the word I think we have a chance

Hate it and just ignore sellers that have checked that option... not just for coins either.

I recently had a huge battle with it. I bought an old pamphlet for $1.00 and with Global Shipping to China, the shipping charges were $38.00. Before I bid, I arranged with the seller the actual shipping charges ($2.35). When the time came for her to turn off Global Shipping, it became a disaster which involved numerous emails and misunderstandings. Took over a month but finally got it straightened out. It was the first time I ever dealt with it and the last. I have been temped to purchase a Post box across the line in Blaine, WA. I could go there every summer and pick up all my little things I buy.
I wish Canada Post would get its act together and figure out how to work with the USPS for tracking and reasonable shipping charges. Too much to hope for of course.

Yeah, this program sucks! It's hard to find a seller who isn't using it! What gets me is that everything is going up, postage rates, ebay fees, etc. (which get passed onto the buyer), but why is it that Canada's duty-free amount hasn't changed in years or even decades?!? It's still $20 or under. Shouldn't it be $40 or even $60 by now? I think the US has $200 duty free. Not sure about other countries, but aren't we being duped

As long as countries have revenue shortages they will try to tax, duty and skim their way to prosperity. As a Seller remember to opt out of the program; as a Buyer just don't buy from Sellers that use the GSP. Eventually, ebay will see it isn't working (ie making money) and will modify the program.

we all need to message sellers that have this global shipping in place and explain how this is a rip off and will hurt their sales, I have already convinced a few to stop using it! if we all do this I think we can make a difference

I do this already and I get many thank you. What may be a better option; is writing a guide or review on the topic and have it posted on .com. This way you could send a link instead of repeating the whole explaination each time. I get tired out going into detail about the program. It's something we can add to our personal ebay pages.
