Well it will differ from year to year as the coin press pressure was often changed each year mostly to extend die life. Generally weaknesses would be the high points which would be the riders helmet, horses head and the dragons wing joint. On the other side it would be the ear and the hair.

Thank you for the information. I still find it difficult to tell the difference between die wear and circulation wear. All looks the same to me lol. And when I go to buy it's die wear so it gets a better grade and costs me more but when I go to sell it's circulation wear and gets a couple of grades lower. Frustrating.

This was purchased from Klaus Ford a number of years ago as a Choice Unc. When I looked at it recently, to my eyes it looked like an EF or thereabouts so I thought I'd double check on the forum here. I haven't really lost any money on this as gold was cheap back then when I bought it. But I've had the same thing happen with KJC. Buy at one grade, have to sell a couple of grades lower.

I'd say it's possible that the coin could be UNC for all we know. It's very hard to grade coins from photos - to me, it looks gEF, but I could see it in person and think otherwise. The fields look free from digs and markings which are common to sovereigns and the wear might be the result of die wear.

Klaus Ford is a fairly reputable dealer, so I'd say if they said ChUNC, there might be more to this coin.

Looks 58, but best to view it in person.

This is even better. I took it to the local coin dealer and he graded it VF. I think I am starting to see the fascination for PCGS.

It will just be another opinion to be honest.

EDIT: That being said, if you want to sell it, I'd get it graded.

A coin dealer will grade lower, because if he is to buy it, he knows a lower grade should result in a lower buying price.
The opposite applies to a seller.
I understand why the dealer said what he said. He is not a TPG without any vested interest.
Therefore, I don't believe the dealer.

Without having a close examination in hand it isn't possible to give an exact grading.
But shame on those 2 dealers who called it ChUnc and VF. There is signs of minor wear on the high points so it isn't Unc and the coin is at least a nice EF.
The coin looks AU53-55 so it might possibly end up AU50 or AU58 when it is properly graded.

Thanks guys. Have sold the coin to the dealer as I desperately needed the cash quickly to take my cat to the vet. I noticed the dealer is now reselling the same coin as an Unc.

I just have one question now. How do I become a dealer? lol.

Learjet: I hope you are able to get your cat upgraded from poor to at least VF! THEN you would have gotten good value for your half sovereign.

I recently took a brand new mint coin that was MS as you can get. The first thing he said when he looked at it was, "how did it get so scratched up?" I learned from then on to never trust him and it sounds like your dealer is much the same. Too bad.

my favourite dealer response was when I handed a dealer I had only just meet a 1923 half penny and he looked it over and then asked me "what have you got here?"
I bet you if I had said a penny my grandma left me how much is it worth I would have been offered $50
